Watford (H) Post Match Thread

does the attacker have to be intending to strike/play the ball however? what if sterlings next touch was to control the ball...he certainly didn't intent the ball to come off him and go into the net...he may have intended to either shoot, control or pass with his first touch but I'm guessing any of those options means he was offside?
Any attempt to play the ball makes him offside. It doesn't matter what he does with it. Even if he doesn't touch it, officially, although they usually wait until the player does to give it.

As Pep said City wanted VAR and it was not approved for this season.

Besides that, a valuable 3 points. We woke up in the second half. After having the week off it took us a while to get going. In the end class told.

That’s what I thought but it seems they are trying to rewrite the laws for certain games, you can bet if it was the scousers or rags or Harry Kane they would be saying fuck all about offside, which it wasn’t anyhow...

Absolutely this. Listening to Peter fucking Walton and Keown, no surprise they interpreted it in favour of Watford. The exact same circumstances with Salah/Kane/Rashford then it would be different.

It was offside but Humphreys was way off, suggesting it "changed the game", we started the second half much better.

They hadn't changed a thing at 1-0 and we played through a packed defence for that 2nd goal, it wasn't a counter. I maintain the goal was coming, so much so that I'd have preferred to have seen that ruled offside, just so we don't have to have this conversation over a game we absolutely dominated in. We should have scored 6 really, there was a foul in the build up to their only shot/goal at 3-0 down(I also suspect Deeney was offside but need to watch it back).

That doesn't even out the amount of offsides, generous penalties and so on that Liverpool have had so far this season but it does even up the illegitimate goal away at Wolves for our part.

Offside offence
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
• interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or

1. clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent ----- did sterlings action IMPACT on the defender....Im guessing tis yes as if sterling wasn't there he may have let the ball run or control it...but how many times do we see defenders clear it cause they think someone it there when actually no one is.....was he CLEARLY trying to play the ball?

2. making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball or -----the defender plays the ball so this cant be the reason for offside....the defenders ability to play the ball isn't impacted....

therefore the only point that makes it offside would be number 1

Just out of interest, is that rule about having to stay a metre away from a defending wall already in effect? I noticed that the Watford players weren't crowding our wall like teams normally do at the end.

Sterling was interfering with play it was offside imo. Nonetheless its about time we got one going our way so many of these go against us.

Tough game to watch first half, I thought it would be another Bournemouth style game but the lads worked hard 2nd half especially Bernardo.

Now over to Liverpool, lets see how they do being 4 points behind after being so full of themselves all season
