When do we reckon then? Sunday? Monday?

City obviously waiting for after the CL final for maximum impact.

Okay, time to share the info, as I am now allowed. I was told by an informed member of the forum in private that the release clause is of £250M and it only kicks in if his performance standards and numbers in the first three years are below a certain level.

In other words, it is absolutely nothing to be concerned and like said, it will probably be gone in 12 months when a new contract is renegotiated. He isn’t leaving soon. If he eventually leaves, it probably would not be through an activation of release clause.
Thank you for the insight, feel more re-assured now. The real question now is does he play Erling and Alvarez together !!!!
I guess we have been spoiled by players retiring after playing for City, the exception being Sane. Perhaps an unrealistic expectation

So, you don't actually know. At all, let alone 100%. Slippery slope this, pretending your way into the Itk game, careful what you wish for.

haha - so we have put a clause in his contract that creates a financial incentive to play shit?

sounds more like something United would do

I'm wondering if Gus got it wrong and the performance based stuff is to do with our performance, rather than his. For example, if we fail to qualify for the Champions League. That would make more sense because it protects him from being stuck at a shit team.

What I don't understand is why anyone would think his release clause will be written out of his next contract extension, if he signs one. If they've insisted on having one, why would they agree to not have one slightly later on? I don't get it.

The release clause, if there is one, really shouldn't be an issue. The club will have been comfortable with the value and conditions or they wouldn't have agreed to it, if indeed they have. Some parts of the media will try guess a value or reasoning, and spin it as our bowing to player demands or his using us as a stepping stone. To devalue the fact we signed the biggest talent for pretty damn cheap ahead of Europe's biggest clubs. It is just portrayal led narrative, a more subtle form of the 'here for the money mercinaries' which doesn't really wash any more. We should know better than to jump to negatives for such loose claims.

yeah maybe Gus just got the wrong end of the stick… I can’t see any club (even the Scum) agreeing to a release clause that kicks in if a player underperforms. It doesn’t make any sense at all for a club to agree to that under any circumstances

You know what, I went back and read our exchange again and yes, it isn’t about the player, it’s about the club, so I apologize. And I don’t know what the details are, like I said, but it’s very possible that it’s linked to UCL qualification if I had to guess.

The reason I believe it could be written out is because it’s there also to facilitate these negotiations, both ways. We’d improve the contract also to get rid of it. It is similar to what PSG negotiated with Verratti when signing a new contract.

When you say “they’ve insisted on having one”, let’s be clear, this was the Raiola way. He isn’t here to push these tactics anymore. My understanding is that the Brazilian lawyer who’s in charge now, based on my asking around, isn’t a hardliner like the late guy. In fact, I wouldn’t be shocked if the Haalands went looking for a new agent in the near future

I assumed that the release clause was just a smart move to protect him from having to be stuck at an underperforming club, so I'm still not sure what the point of taking it out would be.

If he gets a couple of years down the line and whichever club offers to pay £250m for him then we can just match their wage offer and if he's comfortable then he'll stay.

But if we get a few years down the line and everything has fallen to pieces and they removed the buyout clause a year ago when he extended then he's potentially going to be stuck in a Harry Kane situation.

I'm not saying you're wrong but I think the way his career has been handled so far has been perfect and their insistence on a buyout clause has served them well, while the lack of one has famously bitten quite a few players on the arse.

That’s where our model of letting players who want to leave go, I’d think, would give them the reassurance. I see us making him the sole top earner in the PL 12/18 months from now, after a successful season, new Pep contract, and you’d think we’d propose to take the clause out. He’s starting with this standard of wages obviously aiming at a very soon renegotiation.

If you had to guess? I thought you knew 100%.

Even if there is a release clause, why are people so insecure about City that you think he’ll 100% want to leave after 2 years?
For all we know he could want to stay for 10

It's worked for me so far. I had Pep down for three years and then he'd be off. Every year since has been a blessing.

Similarly, Erling is off after two years and nobody can tell me otherwise...

Some of the release triggers are performance based more to do with City, rather than the player.

In the extremely unlikely event of relegation and two years spent out of Champs League.
There's something really funny about discussions about relegation. Surely must be in case we fuck it like Rangers or Juve in some capacity rather than performance
