A Palace fan's perspective:

This was my first ever trip to the Etihad. I had been to Maine Road on a few occasions and was always impressed by the atmosphere there. One move to a new stadium later and once again we’re visiting a soulless modern day arena. It is hardly surprising when there is a stage outside with band performing and all sorts of food stands and shops. I had to double check that I had not turned up at a NFL match at Wembley! Sorry City, you just embarrassed yourselves and have lost the awesome place that you previously held in my mind.

As for the Palace. Again we were raved about by the press and City fans alike, however, I still think that it was something missing. Perhaps it was just a Palace goal on this occasion or perhaps it was the layout of the away end that prevented an epic atmosphere, however, once again ‘could do better’ is my assessment... even if it seems a little harsh.

I am not sure "raved" is the correct word, Palace defended en masse as normal for a Pulis team and it is so much easier to destroy a game than be creative. Why the press rave about this is beyond me. But also as normal for a Pulis team they left with no points but did have the usual Pulis sound bite of being so proud of the players playing against a team that cost so much and earned more wages.

Oh and as for the Palace atmosphere it seemed to me that the palace fans spent more time singing about how they sing all the time or we dont rather than about their team apart from the usual Eagles chant every so often. Having heard so much about their ultras I was surprised at them being no better than any other visiting team. We were quieter than normal it has to be said but didnt we just know what type of game it would be.

Most fans who follow teams that are struggling tend to sing more as it distracts from some of the dross you see your team serve up at an away game

We used to do exactly the same when we were crap. I remember being at Everton in the 80's when they were winning the league and we were getting relegated. We out sang them all day until the Liverpool score was shown on the scoreboard and it confirmed the title was more or less theirs.

We organised pre match sing songs to build the atmosphere on the concourse then the display was to help take it on into the match because we feared apathy

But the longer people get exposed to what we do the better it will get

We are trying to provide some passion some inspiration. We even suggested bring back the boys in blue song at full time even if we lose. We don't want old songs to die out and we want new songs to carry.

Take away all the flags and banners and it would be a corporate concrete bowl. Visuals are a starting point. Each one bigger. Another staging post.

also if your expectation is that a display would guarantee a top atmosphere then that's unrealistic. It takes us working in partnership with the club over a long period of time to achieve it. I think by your own admission yesterday you weren't at the game. Even if we get 5% more noise ie everyone singing tony pulis wears the club shop its 5% better than it would have been

if it was that easy to turn it round in 4 months then everyone would have done it by now.

Think to the games (home and away) where the atmosphere has been better than normal and I bet most of them had a good atmosphere on the concourse pre game.

It would probably then encourage people to get in to the ground earlier, which would then also help to improve the atmosphere.

Old crowds were composed of loads of blokes who came from nearby by bus, foot, pushbike or train. They could have a few pints with no problem. Loads of local boys could afford tickets too.

The modern crowd is made up of affluent, middle-aged men driving in from the suburbs and further out. They can't drink because they are driving. They often bring their wives and children. It is a family day out like going to Chester Zoo or Alton Towers.

happy hour only works if fans still get to their seats in plenty of time and they get served quickly.

Not all are like that, i organise a coach from Middleton and bring 49 mainly middle aged blokes who do not come from the suburbs but places like Langley, Boarshaw, Hollins and Moorclose.

There are about two women and 5 kids/teenagers

We usually have had 6 pints before kick off, some at half time and more afterwards. This explains why we don't sing, usually pissed.

Thats exactly right. More and more tourists / new fans joining now and the trick is to integrate them into the dna of the club getting them familiar with club songs showing them what it's like to be a blue

after the game yesterday they played boys in blue. I'd like to hear it all the way through but after 20 seconds there was 4 minutes of adverts over the tannoy. Future games and sales in the club shop. So we get the song but the club have to meet fffp so there's the corporate element under the surface all the time. We've never had it so good but it goes hand in hand with what the club needs to do.

It's still progress. Swales would never have worked with fan groups and franny lee's fan on the board was about him trying to control fan opinions

One with minimal season ticket holders so people aren't bein kicked out of their seats . A petition could then be made asking who would be willin to be relocated into this area to create a new singin section. If you got good numbers, all that were willin to sing could move there and sing together which would then spread throughout the ground . There is 36,000 season ticket holders . Surely there is a block with low amounts if season ticket holders that could be taken ? .

The 'singers' corner and south stand would be ideal but it's full of season ticket holders and sadly too many that don't want to sing .

I applaud the efforts of 1894 Group.
I am someone who likes to sing yet at other times I am stony silent.
That's usually because I feel sick (from tension not dodgy burger).
So speaking personally the thing that will get me singing is anything that makes me relax a bit.
A two or three goal lead does help.
I do drive so getting pissed is not an option.

TBH, I doubt the club would do it anyway having seen what has happened at Celtic recently

It'll just be a section for singers . Yes, a few banners and flags( not breaking club rules) but it's what these particular fans would want in that section so the club would have peace of mind that other fans weren't havin their view obstructed etc . They could even do a tester season and if people played up the club could put a stop to it . I really don't think there would be any bother at all !. Infact, I think there would be less bother .

Doing a fantastic job so far by the looks of it, should only get better as well. Its strange how we can have such good support away from home yet some matches at the etihad are quiet, I suppose thats like the majority of English football clubs though.
