Wembley The National Disgrace

Not sure teams from Lands End get to Wembley that often, so probably not too relevant.

Somewhere in The Midlands would have been a far better and fairer location. Clue’s in the name.
The thing is though the middle of England is nearer to Preston I believe.
It’s the English National Stadium. Scotland have Hampden - Wales have The Millennium.

It should not have been London.

We were sold a pup by Bates and co. Built by the South for the South.
Contracts given to southern construction firms and lots of back handers along the way.

I remember when it opened that the FA said it needed the semi finals had to be there as it had to pay for itself. They’ll never move them now.

It is a soulless place and no matter how much they try to push its history - other than the pie eaters victory grrrrrr- there’s not really been the iconic moments that the old place had.

I like Wembley. I agree with the east to west issue but I would rather go there than shitholes like Villa Park and the Old Toilet

Sure I once read the actual midpoint of England was some village in Derbyshire. But that’s by the by. No one is suggesting it should be exactly midway.

I seem to remember the shortlist was London, Coventry and Birmingham.

Out of those three, Birmingham would have easily been the best and fairest choice. If you’re up in Sunderland or down in Plymouth, pretty much anywhere is going to be a trek. But it’s pretty accessible in a couple of hours from most places in the country, not on the extremes.

Derbyshire? Ha ha thank fuck for satnavs!

Good job I wasn’t driving Saturday we would have ended up watching Celtic/Inverness!

You’re right though, the logical choice was Brum but, when was the last time the FA showed any logic whatsoever

In Birmingham. Its a disgrace that the national stadium is at one end of the country rather than roughly in the middle.

The FArce did a survey with Engerland members before knocking down the Old Empire Stadium. Just over 85% said that the New National Stadium should be built in the Midlands. The FArce said, OK, we'll build it in Wemberlee again.

I noticed on Saturday that the place is already ageing terribly with a lot of little things, and it only opened 15 years ago.

Loads of turnstiles don’t work properly, escalators don’t work, toilet cubicles don’t lock, toilets don’t flush, taps don’t work,

Another benefit of building it in Birmingham would be even if it did decay into a broken pile of smouldering rubble after a few years, it’d still be a vast improvement on whatever was there before.

Wembley Stadium is awful.
Personally, I thought they should have built the new stadium near to East Midlands airport. Easy access to the M1, M42, M6 & obviously the airport. Much more central & accessible then wembley.
I don’t remember the name of the tory politician (Tessa Jowell?) who announced the decision to build the new stadium at wembley, but I was driving at the time & remember the radio interview & hearing the little chuckle & statement that “of course it was always going to be be built at Wembley” before commenting about how unfair it would be for London based fans to be expected to travel to Birmingham to watch games at the new stadium.
I nearly crashed my car I was so fucking angry.
