It's all about intent isn't it?

If you call someone a paki in this country, they will be offended because they know you are intending to be offensive.
Austrailians commonly use the word paki, purely as an abbreviation for a Pakistani and as local Pakistanis know that, I am sure they don't take any offense.

I doubt many people are that thick that they can't see the difference but it suits their shit argument. The same people normally claim it can't be offensive to call someone a ****** as they often here black people themselves using the word.

Few actually put it to the test though.

I don't think this is always the case. When my dad says he is going to the Paki shop. I don't think he is trying to offend them.

Maybe but would he call the bloke in the shop a paki?

He knows his name so probably not.

Any one think it's going to be the same with Gays in 10-20 years time? At the moment they are loads of jokes on TV about them. Songs at the match about "faggots in the pink" etc are we going to be cringing at them in 2040.

They're cringeworthy now.

You big gay.

Quite scary to see all the blatant racism on this thread. Also very disappointing to see all the lazy thinking and belligerent lack of recognition about the affects it can have.

People are quibbling over the syntax and it seems trying to claim it is OK to use words like P*** and N*****. Awful.

If you want to see modern racism come to Australia the Indian population are copping it big time. It's somehow seem as an initiation over here. From WW2 it as the Italians and Greeks who got called 'wogs' then the Vietnamese refugees were 'Nips'. Now we are seeing open loathing towards Indian people. The irony being that it is not only australians but all the other aforementioned migrants joining in. It's seems to be an accepted rite of passage aimed at testing the mettle of the Indian populace. Disturbing.
I was in the NW of England in the late seventies when a band called Skrewdriver were around they went on to become one of the biggest right wing groups in Europe, the front man died in a car accident which saved us all from further blood and honour and bring back the Crusaders type of shit. Sad times for blighty and now it's a sad time for Australia.

Where abouts in Oz are you?

Sounds like Melbourne, there's been a few incidents in the past couple of years.
When I first came to Australia the cricket commentators called the Pakistani team the Paki's,which at the time was jaw dropping to me.
Tony Greig was the most persistant and he should of known better as he'd lived in England in the 70's,but then again he is South African.

I get to Australia every couple of years and as much as I love the place, the inherent and quite open racisim is astonishing. I come across this in the major cities, (Sydney and The Manchester of the South AKA Melbourne). I can only imagine what it's like in the sticks. still probably no worse than the bible belt though...

Was I?

I had ethinic friends then and I have the same now.

Unintentionally (by todays standards) my vocabulary was not perfect, that said nor was the vocabulary of many, if not all my ethnic friends.

If I spoke today like I spoke then I would be called racist, I wouldn't have said I was though.

Don't get me wrong I'm not proud of the words used but that was then and this is now. I have moved on.

Would we classify Guy Gibson as a racist?
