Were you racist in 1984?

I think there was a thread on here abt this the other week
Sweden,swede. .denmark,Dane. .polish,pole,scotland,scot. .afghanistan,afghan. .etc etc
Someone said it was the only country in the world where you couldn't abbreviate it from Pakistan to Paki. . .
And no one knew why. .

One reason is the term 'Paki' was used and intended in an offensive and derogatory manner, the terms 'Brit', 'Scot' etc were not really used that way.

Anyone'd think the Moss Side riots didn't happen.
I saw plod driving TAG transits through peoples' front doors off Claremont Road. First time we'd ever seen police vans with big grilles over the windows.

I remember the 1st asian family moving onto our street and someone set fire to their house. i was 11 and remember being upset because i had got friendly with their son who was my age and he had all the cricket gear. no one was hurt but they moved after that

I grew up in Moss Side, mate. And I can tell you that racism was rife there in the 1980s. There wasn't a day went by when I wasn't called a 'black' this and a 'black' that, or told to 'fuck off back to Pakistan'. I wouldn't have minded so much, but I'm white....

No I never saw racism when I went to City, to be fair I think I can remember things being shouted like ''Get the black bastard'' etc towards a palyer but very rare. I know my old man would never have put up with it if somebody near him shouted anything. He was always up for it at a game, working man's pleasure and a release from a shit week of work and no money I suppose but he's always been right down the line with racism. He was a Catholic and married a Protestant and it caused loads of shit and he told everyone to go fuck themselves he'd marry a black, green, purple woman if he loved them. He always got on with the Italians Sivoris and Grannellis and was mate's in the 60's with a couple of black lads and he always told me how he stood side ny side with them taking and giving it out. He also twatted a City fan for calling Trautmann a German so and so when he joined us but thats another story.

Jesus, you two must have been wearing ear muffs and blinkers in the 1980's.

I stood in the Kippax and heard loads of monkey chants. John Chiedoze of Notts County being one notable, but far from exclusive example.

What about the hissing when we played Spurs?

What about the 'one Salman Rushdie' chants to the Asian ref when Derby County dicked us 6-0 at the Baseball Ground?

Maybe it's only middle class people that notice these things ;-)

I think when me and blue2112 first started going the Cool Cats were there. I doubt you would have heard monkey chants then, even though as all clubs did City had a skinhead following.

In all my time watching City i really dont think racism has ever been a problem, but yes there will have been pockets of racism. The 81 final and the song about Spurs are on there to Belsen being a lowpoint. But when you consider clubs like Everton didnt have a black player until relatively recently, United didnt have a protestant manager until fat ron, I think City can be proud of our inclusivity. Bert playing at a protestant/jewish club after the war, Williams being the first black goalie and being widely admired are feathers in our cap we should look back on with pride.

Yes there is still racism and it is abhorrent, but i hope that people see City a working class club started by a woman to allieviate boredom of poor kids which has grown into a club owned by a muslim Shiek with a multitude of races and relegions playing for us as a standard bearer in the fight against prejudice.

I agree with much of what you post here Rasc, but I repeat that if you and 2112 have never seen racism at City (even in the period to which you refer) then you must have been oblivious to it, rather than it not existing.

I think our record compares with anyone's in terms of being a progressive club but to say the problem hasn't been there at all in the time of the Cool Cats or at any other time, for that matter, is just plain wrong.

I fail to see why someone from Pakistan being called a Paki is offensive yet we openly call people from Scotland Jocks,Irish Paddies, heaven forbid someone calling me a Brit to my face.Maybe it's because it suits certain peoples agenda

Paddy for an Irish person is as equally racist as other terms discussed on this thread but is far less taboo, IMHO. It's protected by the Race Relations Act etc.

It's offensive because ''Paki'' is used as a derogatory term aimed at anyone from the Indian sub continent, the middle east, northern Africa, rather than specifically people from Pakistan.

It would be like someone from India calling all white people from Europe ''Taffies'' or ''Jocks'' or ''Paddies'', because we all look the same.... don't we?

Calling someone a Paddy may indeed be offensive, but not racist as the Irish are not a race, in the same way calling someone a Scouse twat is not racist.
If an Irish family moved in next door, you wouldn't know they were Irish until you spoke to them. But you know straight away if a ''Paki'' moves in next door because you can see the colour of their skin. But are they from Pakistan? Or India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Egypt, Afghanistan, Nepal etc etc etc etc? That's the difference.

So does it only become racist once the Nationality of the person is known? Not sure I agree with that.
