Were you racist in 1984?

Anyone'd think the Moss Side riots didn't happen.
I saw plod driving TAG transits through peoples' front doors off Claremont Road. First time we'd ever seen police vans with big grilles over the windows.
I grew up in Moss Side, mate. And I can tell you that racism was rife there in the 1980s. There wasn't a day went by when I wasn't called a 'black' this and a 'black' that, or told to 'fuck off back to Pakistan'. I wouldn't have minded so much, but I'm white....

I wasn't saying there wasn't!
I was saying it was rife and part of the riots was the people rising against it!
There was also a lot of opportunistic vandalism as well.

I fail to see why someone from Pakistan being called a Paki is offensive yet we openly call people from Scotland Jocks,Irish Paddies, heaven forbid someone calling me a Brit to my face.Maybe it's because it suits certain peoples agenda

How many times have you been called a Brit (or a dirty fucking Brit) whilst walking down the road?
Suggesting there is some sort of parity between Yank or Jock or Brit and Paki, is either very naive or stubbornly uninformed
I think there was a thread on here abt this the other week
Sweden,swede. .denmark,Dane. .polish,pole,scotland,scot. .afghanistan,afghan. .etc etc
Someone said it was the only country in the world where you couldn't abbreviate it from Pakistan to Paki. . .
And no one knew why. .

The abbrviation used in India, Pakistan and lots of other countries (in the press anyway) is 'Pak'.

plenty of racism still at city, amongst a minority of fans. Working in manchester city centre a couple of years back when the edl had there demo, saw plenty of united and city shirts amongst the crowd that day. Hear it in the pubs and in the stands, I dont think bluemoon represents what its really like if im being honest.

Only a minority of city fans are like that though
Don't agree, plenty of racism of all kinds on bluemoon probaly an internet thing, only a minority.
We actually had a bluemoon member on here that started a well populated thread that was asking for City fans to wear their shirts with pride & protest at the BBC studios in Manchester over their pro Jewish bias,it turned violent aswell they attempted to storm the studios.
As you work in Manchester you will have seen the huge UAF marches that provoke hatred & are desperate for the police to attack them & boo silences for my countrys war dead
So yes on that point i do agree, plenty of racism about

This is where it gets mixed up. Too many people see a religion, ie. the Jewish faith, as a different 'race'.

This is wrong.

Judaism, Islam, Catholic - all religions. Black, white, hispanic, asian - these are races and the belittling of any of these groups, by another, is termed Racism.

Religious intolerance is called Sectarianism.

It's all about intent isn't it?

If you call someone a paki in this country, they will be offended because they know you are intending to be offensive.

Austrailians commonly use the word paki, purely as an abbreviation for a Pakistani and as local Pakistanis know that, I am sure they don't take any offense.

I doubt many people are that thick that they can't see the difference but it suits their shit argument. The same people normally claim it can't be offensive to call someone a ****** as they often here black people themselves using the word.

Few actually put it to the test though.

I always think back to when i was a kid, whenever this subject surfaces. I lived in Glasgow's east end before moving to this wonderfull city in the mid eighties.

Anyhow, my dad's sister married my uncle who was jamaican, and when her two sons came to visit in the school holidays, it was the ONLY BLACK people we ever seen in the flesh! (as the area i lived in was so racist and well fucked up, that locals burned a family from nottingham out of their home, just because of their english heritage)

They got mixed receptions, but usually good as my family was one of the biggest and strongest in the area. I tend to think what would've happened if it wasn't.

Although, when i moved to manchester in 86, my first house was on the alex park estate. I fucking loved living there, even though tensions were high, i hardly noticed it at all. The sad thing is, quite a few of the lads i kicked about with are now just statistics in what i now see as a dark time for this great city..

I was called a Manc twat by some Rags at Wembley. I should have had them charged for being racist.

I don't think this is always the case. When my dad says he is going to the Paki shop. I don't think he is trying to offend them.

I was probably racist as a kid. Not in the 'lets go beating up blacks' kind of way but in the ignorant way lots of us brought up in little northern towns were (are?). I only ever remember two indians, one black guy and one chinese girl in my high school so we were pretty ignorant to the big wide world.
