Wesley Sneijder

Silva is a good enough player to do it from wide, roaming and swapping as he does. Schneider I'm not sure about . He looks more likely to be one of the two more advanced midfielders.

One thing is for sure, there are going to be a lot of rotation options next year. More than this year by the sound of our targets.

Great news for us if we can keep them happy. But it's easier to keep squad players like vieira and Zabaleta happy than the likes of Johnson and Milner who want to play every week.

I really don't think positioning is that strict. Have a look at stats showing where players are for majority of the match and you'll se that a 4,3,3 is exactly the same as a 4,5,1. Where they end up receiving the most passes depends on the player, not the manager.

Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm just talking about the 'hole' position, and the type of player that we can put in there. He's got to be able to press his opposite number in midfield, fall back when we lose possession etc. For me, Sneijder's not up to the job.

If all the players are good enough they can all play regularly though. Where it breaks down is when the replacement players are so far inferior to the 1st 11 that they can only play one game in 4 or 5 because they weaken the team. If we're going for every competition, all the players, if good enough, should get plenty of games. If they don't step upto the mark when they get the chance & end up playing very few games, it's their own fault.

I might be missing something here but this
Trequartista just means attacking midfield, therefore the way we played last season we played

............................striker

............AM..............AM............AM

..................DM.................DM

or slight variations of that, so why can't we have Sneijder and Sanchez and Silva playing behind Tevez changing at will, with Yaya and NDJ screening the defence when we want.

Or am I being thick.

No, we could do that. We don't have to be rigid. Imo that's exactly what Mancini is trying to build. Same goes for Balotelli & AJ, even Tevez may play deeper sometimes behind Dzeko.

Javi Martinez could play that role in the hole with the added bonus that he can actaully defend and get stuck in if needed. He could also play further back in a 433. Very useful player to have, young and likely to be world class. He basically ran the midfield against England at the under 21s comp.

It would work, but we would end up playing like Spain at the world cup - loads and loads and loads of tippy tappy possesion but no cutting edge.

Looking at Barca in their front 6, they seem to have

2 out and out goal poachers (Villa, Pedro) - We have any two from Balo, Tevez, Dzeko

1 Player who will run and commit men (Messi) - Hopefully this will be Sanchez but maybe Johnson

1 Trequartista (Iniesta) - Silva

2 "Regista"s who "hold" and are brilliant at keeping the ball (Xavi and Busquets, with Xavi making the odd dart forward) - Yaya can play one, but whether De Jong can play the busquets role is yet to be seen.

I'm enjoying watching this discussion but what makes you think Mancini is going to make a radical change in his football philosophy? Italian football (which resembles what he's brought to City) is the antithesis of Spanish football (which Barcelona epitomise). It looks like a lot of the contribution is looking for ways to be more like Barcelona which is the other side of the spectrum to where you are at the moment (not to say thats bad, Mourinho's philosophy too is at the other side of the spectrum).

So do you think Chelsea is after both Snejider and Modric?
