West Ham (H) Post Match Thread

Fucking hell I really dont know what planet some on here are from.

Following an away Europe trip and a Cup final on Sunday that went to extra time and penalties, last night we were faced with a a match against a much improved side who are no longer relegation contenders and who have been playing well. Hardly surprising given they have an ex City manager who knows a thing or two about doing well in the Premier League, add to the mix a team that contained a couple more returning heroes and of course we have a few injuries to key players.....

It was hardly likely to be a stroll in the park was it?

As it happens we battled through and got the one thing that anyone should really be bothered about....a win and 3 points. Thats exactly what Liverpool got as expected so job done.

Hardly surprisingly all things considered it wasnt a vintage performance. I thought the back four were excellent notably the perpetually understated Otamendi, and Ederson did what he had to do superbly.

Further forward midfield were functional but against a well disciplined and impressive defensive display the forwards struggled. Sane had one of his poor nights, as did Aguero apart from a much better penalty than the one he took Sunday. Mahrez does look to be struggling to get to grips with his move here, but his time may well come.

A statement maybe about Fodens progress in the mind of the manager to put him on when he did...a cock up at that stage would have been calamitous, and Pep trusted Phil to have the cool head needed to help see us home last night.

All in all surely a satisfactory if not outstanding nights work?

Those who have been throwing words ranging from awful to shite are in my view expecting the truly impossible. To those I ask one question...Do you not think you are turning just a touch raggy, as you are replicating the same sort of nonsense that for a couple of decades was almost exclusively heard coming from the general direction of Old Shitehouse.

Its a rare occasion for me to agree with anything purple nose says but this is one of those exceptions :-)

I would say a bit early to go that far. Ask yourself has this guy got the kind of talent that could make the difference in a tight Champions League Semi or final and you have to think his past form says he has. I would certainly be giving it another season before any thoughts of flogging him to a European rival should happen.
Perhaps. He got off to a bad start with that infamous miss ,and as I have said, I want him to succeed and not only be remembered for that.
However, last night was very poor from a lad trying to force his way into a team. He has a long way to go imo.

He has and I doubt anyone would claim he has been a great success thus far. I just have a feeling he will click somewhere along the line. He would certainly not be alone in the current squad in having taken some time to settle in. Otamendi, Sterling, being two examples both who have now become valuable players in our quests.

Pep had said that he wanted to be able to smell the desire last night and I don't think City disappointed at all. Right from the start City were playing some delightful, one touch passing football at high tempo and this banished any fear of fatigue after Wembley and the ten man heroics in Germany. Nor was their any sign of players still being locked into the high Sunday must have created. Pep's changes, enforced and otherwise, helped ensure the attitude was right and the legs as fresh as possible but so did the professionalism of players like Vinnie, Sergio and others. The performance was good. At a time when any and every game is a potential banana skin it was City's professionalism and team spirit which saw us through when not at our best. We kept possession enough to ensure that the hammers rarely threatened: Chelsea were not allowed a single shot on target in 120 minutes and WHU managed one in 90 - which brought a fine save from the ever alert Eddie. Vinnie, Dino and Nico were very good and Zinchenk had another excellent game. Up front it was adeal more frustrating and it seemed the goal would never come, but we plugged away patiently, creating chances and never getting downhearted, until the tireless and brilliant Bernado's direct play won the penalty. Soft? Certainly if your a fanatical scouser, much clearer if you're a human being. A much needed and deserved win which never looked in any danger after the breakthrough. The chances spurned and the form of Mahrez is a concern but we have to keep believing.

Mahrez isn't and never will be a City player.
Last night he was terrible.
He slows down the play and his passing is woeful.
The money we wasted on him should have been spent on a DM.
Whilst his chances have been limited he has shown no sign of improvement and hes has been training with us every day.
We need to take the hit and get rid in the summer.
We will be lucky to get £20M.
Compare him to Zinchenko he was my motm yesterday he has come on leaps and bounds with limited chances and he has changed position.
Is that the same Zinchenko that many claimed previously should be let go as not good enough. Christ even both Silva’s took a while.
Mahrez will be fine and whilst he’s in a blue shirt will have my support. You’ll know when he’s not good enough, Pep will sell him, I don’t see that happening

It was more a case of the poor choice of final ball for me than the chances spurned although Silva certainly should have scored. Other than that I agree it was a good solid dominant display. Think it helped that West Ham hardly looked up for doing much going forward. Nasri trotting around doing nothing and Carroll a waste of space up front. Decent turnout from their fans I thought for a Wed night game.

Felt sure last night that Zabbs would score a 65-yard daisy-cutter that took 3 deflections before rocketing in to the top corner of our net. Thankfully we came away with the 3 points - that's all that matters at this stage of the season. Oh and the bonus of annoying the shite out of the red scousers too - "neva a pen, la, neva evva"

If Silva had scored his early chance, rather than hitting the post, then we'd be applauding the brilliant assist from Mahrez.
I also thought that Mahrez was incorrectly blamed for a couple of offsides, when it was actually De Bruyne's fault for delaying his pass.

However, my main irritation was the over-the-top reception for Zabaleta. If only we were so supportive of Walker and Danillo

Wasn't that DeBruyne's pass to Silva?

Spot on mate. I had this argument with the guy next to me when Mahrez didn't "think fast enough" when KDB delayed a pass.

I then got dog's abuse for not giving Zabba a standing ovation (I clapped him on by the way) and was accused of disloyalty to one of our greatest servants. Reminded me of a time when SWP came back with Chelsea and was constantly cheered whilst a number of our players got all sorts of shite!

mark my words ......Mahrez may well just win us the league with a touch of brilliance in a 'must win' game, he certainly has the ability. Its just his confidence that's stopping him, lets get behind the guy and show him some City love...…….. you never know!!

I'd love to find that you're right! At the moment he does seem to be really short on confidence and last night just seemed to accept that nothing would go right for him. The link up between him and KdB just seemed nonexistent last night: KdB expecting Mahrez to go beyond the young full back while Mahrez always seemed to prefer to check back and come inside. Whether it was the early chance that he skied over which persuaded him to play safe... And this I think is his problem at the moment: he has the ability to check back and cut inside or he can take his man on the outside and get behind the back line. I think KdB and the others would like him to do the latter much more often. Pep is a risk taker in the final third and that's the way the team plays, but at the moment Mahrez isn't. A real good flat out burst, a pinpoint cut back and a tap in from a team mate might indeed do him the world of good.

Bet you complained when folk cheered for Bert Trautmann's return visits too.
