West Ham - Post match thread

Teams can no longer press us by keeping a high line because if they do the pace of Sane, Jesus and Sterling will rip them to shreds.
If they drop deeper then it leaves more space for Silva and De bruyne.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

It looks like the other team aren't trying when in reality they don't know whether to push or stay.

Tremendously exciting times.
It still irks me that the charlatan that is Brendan Rodgers is credited with 'sussing this out' as if pressing our play from the back was a masterstroke befitting his genius and finding us out, in that Chumps League match. We were bedding in under Pep. Wish we could play them now

they were two separate points. Ota likes to do his slidey stuff not always as a last resort, that's generous from you. The fact that Kompany is back fully with his commanding presence and leadership, and the fact he's class and genuine competition I think would raise their game and confidence.
I see. I must have misread. My apologies

I think the first ten games we looked good, sure, but in many ways we were almost like Pellegrini's City at it's best for most of that time. Then we hit a rough patch. The wins against Barcelona and West Brom were indicators of what we were capable of. Touré's return against Palace was a crucial, crucial game for our season.

For me the Leicester game was the real turning point. Since then Pep's taken a more pragmatic approach to the way his team sets up to defend, while still keeping his principles alive. Tonight was another step in the direction of being peak Barcelona. Aside from the slip-ups against Liverpool and Everton it's been looking up for us ever since Zabaleta fired us in front at the Etihad in December.
I disagree with this. He has in fact been less pragmatic (especially if you define pragmatic as following ingrained premier league culture principles: the key one being a tackling machine protecting the back 4.

You couldn't move an inch on this site with CM lineup like today's without 2/3 of Bluemoon assuring you that team would get run over. And that you need at least one if not 2 Defensive minded tacklers protecting the back 4.

Happy to see Pep slashing all these myths I've been banging my head against the wall opposing. All the way since Nigel.

They can still press is. They just have to be smarter. Force the ball wide to our fullbacks and clamp down

I'm so so glad we were able to pad up the goal difference...Not every matchday are we going to be the only top side to win, so this was an even better win.

Did not want to post last night and risk looking daft, but was that not one of our best ever performances. Simply unplayable at times. Sane is some player. He's like Spanish Dave on steroids! :-). Only one negative... When the fuck is Sterling going to get some protection from getting kicked to death!!

It's not going happen. That Cresswell tackle alone should have been a red card—I think many a blue's heart was in their mouth when watching it in real time. I know I feared the worst. And watching that incompetent referee wave play on after watching all the way through from ten yards made me want to put my fist through my iPad screen.

If that had been any of ours it would have been an instant red but because it was our opposition, and they were getting battered, the defender was let off. Disgusting decision and we're exceptionally lucky one or both of Raheem's legs or ankles weren't broken.

Can we play them every week?
Superb performance, when the front 6 all play to that standard we are amazing, and to think that doesn't include Aguero, dinho, nolito, gundogan etc too....
Delighted that sane is putting these performances in more regularly now, he was unplayable last night and can open any team up. Get him playing these next 5 games and he'll do the damage against united, chelsea and arsenal.
Brilliant city. Keep it up!

Incredible performance - and credit due where credit is due.

Txiki's recruitment doesn't look so bad after all lol.

Sane, Sterling and Jesus are looking terrifying together. Aguero quite rightly on the bench last night. Anyone else agree that he certainly has a lot of improving to do to deserve a place back in the starting 11?

Fresh legs at full back, and defensive midfield and things could come together so nicely for a long long time.

One of our best "Pep" performances. There was a really good balance, coupled with some really good off the ball movements.

Jesus is doing what Aguero should be in terms of movement. De Bruyne looked his usual class act and Raheem is getting better by the week, as for Sane, phwoar - what a player.

Also think Otamendi and Stones deserve credit, they dhackled Carroll and Antonio very well.

Well done City. Truly impressive performance that will give a lot of confidence through the whole squad. We have a fresh bunch of kids in the front line that seems to have been together for years. And it reflects on the rest. We really do seem to like the West Ham pitch. But let's not get carried away again. We can do if we can put together a string of wins playing this kind of wonderful football.

Youngsters looked great upfront

The old guys silva and yaya just look imperious.

Defence looked solid with a keeper

Something about our system and West Ham just clicks.

Great midweek results.

That was a pleasure to watch. So many positives with that performance, the front three were exceptional with Leroy just pipping the MoM imo. Kev, Dave and Yaya just ran the match and I am still pinching myself thinking back to last season where if we had played those three in midfield we would have been overrun. If anyone really wants to understand why Pep is rightly lauded as the best coach in the world they should look at his handling of Yaya and the resulting outcome. I am not a Bravo basher, I understand the reasons he was brought to the club but some time on the bench may help him rebuild his confidence. Thought Willie did great, like he has all season. Best game in a while for Stones and Ota had a very effective game. Considering the standard of the opposition though, lets not get carried away at this point. Would like to see a proper run put together first (then i'll get carried away).

In five years time, Silva, Touré, Nasri, Hart, Aguero, Zabaleta, Kompany and Fernandindo will all be done or close to done at the top level.
Also in five years time De Bruyne, Jesus, Sterling, Sané, Iheanacho, Stones and Gundogan will be in the prime of their careers.

Swings and roundabouts.
The difference is that we have players like Sancho, Diaz, Dele Bashiru, Gonzalez and others coming through
We didn't have that before and had to spend big repeatedly.
