The Son by Jo Nesbo great stand alone book. The Snowman was one of the best books I've read since the Girl with the dragon tattoo series

Mike Carey's books are always a good read and The Boy on the Bridge was no exception. A prequel to The Girl With All the Gifts but doesn't quite reach the same level as its predecessor as some of the tension and care for the characters wellbeing was a little lacking. Also finished a hardboiled mystery (without the mystery) from David Goodis, The Blonde on the Street Corner, which was also very good.

Been reading a few Ali Smith books lately and liked them a lot ('The Accidental', 'Autumn', 'Winter'). They're a bit "arty", and the latter two are very non-linear, but, bloody hell, I couldn't even get past about page 5 of 'How to be Both'. It was nominated for a bunch of prestigious awards, so maybe it got better, but the start was just gibberish!
