What book are you reading now / or recommend?

You wont find anything new as the books available are a mixture of History and mythology and are probably all that exist in the written word.

You may find different interpretations / translations tho... try The Illiad by Caroline Alexander.

Whilst not out yet the book I am looking forward most is the third in Don Winslow’s Mexican drug series, The Power of the Dog and The Cartel were utterly brilliant, brutal in parts but brilliant, also The Winter of Frankie Machine by the same author is another great read

Yep, Don Winslow is a brilliant author. The Force is great too.

Just finished November Road by Lou Barney. If you like Winslow, you’ll love that.

Anyone interested in WW2 could do worse than read Stalingrad, and Berlin, both by historian Antony Beevor. Both books chronicle the battles fought for each city, they are factually interesting/harrowing/grim and entertaining, and provide historical insight from those who were there, and shows how terrible war is for civilians when fought on your own doorstep.

I’ll have a look at those. Think Beevor does the full WW2 book too doesn’t he?

I’ve just ordered The End by Ian Kershaw. It chronicles the last year of the War from the Assasination attempt on Hitler to the end of the war, questioning how and why the German people were loyal to the end as well as
Detailing the decision making and atrocities. It also shows how the likes of Himmler, Goring, Bormann and Speer grew in power during this period.

I think your are right about Beevor, Im sure I have seen him on tv doing documentaries too, his books are very well researched and written and although they are historical documentaries they almost read like an epic story with the city as the main character.

Can anyone recommend a good book on the history of ancient Greece? Currently playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey and loving the game and want to learn more about Pericles, Herodotus ect

Homers : The Illiad
Thucydides : History of the Peloponnesian war (also covers Pericles Funeral speech)
Herodotus: The Histories

Great primary source recommendations. The ‘Iliad’ is one of the great works of world literature - though the Catalogue of Ships in Book/Chapter 2 is perhaps not to the modern reader’s taste. If you want very good and readable secondary source for 6th and 5th Greece, I would recommend Victor Ehrenberg’s ‘From Solon to Socrates’. Though published as far back as 1973, it is still a standard, and very readable, history of the period.
