The Miniaturist
Got great reviews, seems to have been one of the books to read this year.
It was good but lacking somehow, although the character portrayal of the sister was very good.

Currently reading Lisey's Story by Stephen King. The author rates it as his best work and I can see why; it won't be my favourite book by him but I am enjoying it very much. Mind you, he is my favourite author; although I do have some catching up to do on his stuff.

I have just finished reading Billy Idol's autobiography which I found slightly dull. A good start with his early life but very little about the "Bromley Set" and then OK with the Punk years and the subsequent fame in the States. Very little information on the last twenty or so years though and far too much stuff about bringing in this or that musician who did this or that to a particular track on an album. He didn't hold back though and it's an admirable quality if you can admit to being a knob even if you are a talented one.

I have also just read "Funny Girl" by Nick Hornby. I was absolutely desperate to read this one and I don't read the papers so I have no idea of what the critics have said in the reviews but I really think it's his best novel so far and I have read all of his other books at least three times over.

We had a thread a while ago on "National Treasures". My choices were Weller, Morrisey, Sir Bruce and Michael Caine. I should have put the baldy Arsenal fan on my list as well. If Nick Hornby published his shopping list I would reserve it from the Library.

Terry Pratchett's sort of memoirs 'A slip of the Keyboard'. Rather good so far, not really his life story but more of an informal chat.

Agree I loved the stand but lost interest in the Dark Tower. I might return to it some day as I gave up midway through the first one (gunslinger).

My book recommendation would be Porno by Irvine Welsh. It's the follow up to Trainspotting and is a brilliant read.

The gunslinger was only ever intended as a short story. He went back to it years later and developed the character and the dark tower storyline. The next few books were pretty good, but I lost any interest for the reason stated in the spoiler.

I absolutely loved the Dark Tower series from start to finish. Cowboys, vampires, robots, the Mafia and a crazy train. Whats not to like?

Enjoyed 'The wind through the keyhole' too. A new Dark Tower novel.

Has anyone read Neil Gaimans American Gods? Thinking of giving it a read next.

I read Neil Gaiman's American Gods a few years ago now and he's a very good writer. I've never re read American Gods (read so many books and have a young son) but I can remember various good scenes from it. It's a longish novel though.

the last book I finished is Lavie Tidhar's 'A Man Lies Dreaming'. It's an amazing shortish novel about a man dying in Aushwitz who used to be a detective writer who re-imagines the Nazi's losing the 1933 election and the Communists winning so Hitler flees to England and becomes a private detective. It's moving, funny and great stuff. Hitler doesn't enjoy being circumcised for one!
