I read this a few weeks before Christmas and I gave my opinion on it a few pages ago.

Thanks, just found your ''review''. It is for the punk stuff I really want to read about, so disappointed you say the 'Bromley Contingent' (as a huge Siouxsie fan) isn't really touched on.
Hopefully the Generation X stuff will be enough for me :)
Not too fussed about the past 20 years though!

Hustlers, Beats and Others by Leo Polsky. A totally serious sociological breakdown of beat culture, designed to scare the shit out of the middle class in 1969. It's hilarious.

The Stand should warm you up for The Dark Tower series. I don't know how much King you've read but many of his books interlink and Captain trips and it's aftermath appear in this series too. Great seven books

I thought he got a bit up his own arse with the Dark Tower series.

I went right off it when he wrote himself into the books, and didn't bother reading any further

Agree I loved the stand but lost interest in the Dark Tower. I might return to it some day as I gave up midway through the first one (gunslinger).

King is my favourite author but I only got to book 3 or 4 of the Dark Tower, think I probably stopped part way through one of the books. May go back to them but still have a few of his other novels to catch-up on. Used to buy each of his novels as soon as they were released in hard back and read them straight away but did a lot less leisure reading after we had kids. Currently making a conscious effort to read more novels. Just started 11.22.63; only 740 pages that one!

The Great Siege. Malta 1565 by Ernle Bradford
True story of the Ottaman Turks attempt to conquer Malta in the Summer of 1565, up to an estimated 30,000 Turks and their allies were held off for 6 Months by 540 Knights of Saint John, roughly a 100 allies and a 1,000 Maltese, led by Grand Master Jean De La Valette they defended Fort St. Elmo and Medina with such ferocity and inflicted such losses on the Turks they gave up and sailed home
One of the best books i'v ever read, would make a brilliant film!

I've read that. The first third is fantastic, the middle third is pretty poor and much of it unnecessary IMO, the final third is decent enough.

Maybe I'll just scan through the middle 200 or so pages ;-)

Bernard Cornwell - The Empty Throne

it was dead good

It's on my kindle waiting to be read. I like Cornwell, he's one of my favourite authors.

Well fuck me the wasp factory was a weird freaky book, really dark and disturbing. Really didn't expect that ending either, wasn't sure if i enjoyed it or not but it got me thinking.
