What do you want to see from our captain?

The players around Dunne aways made him look better than he was, particularly Distin and Richards last season. Now Richards has lost his way, Dunne's frailties are becoming more obvious. He's not terrible but who seriously thought he was our best player last season?

But that's City fans - we'd rather have a mediocre trier than someone with a bit of class who can take us to another level.

Yep, nail on the head regarding dunnie that

This isn't a "Dunnie is shit" thread just a bit of constructive criticism about what would improve our team. No problem wth Dunne as a player at the moment but as a captain he will not take us where we want to go.

Nice to see a proper thread not distroyed by kids calling names .........yet!!!

The simple fact is that right now Dunnie is playing poorly and its hard to do the job as a captain when your form is suffering. It doesn't mean that he is gone and can never get it back, but it is very worrying.

I'd say it was the other way around just as much.

RTFpost - I didn't say Dunnie was shit, I like the guy from what I have seen and he is a capable PL CB.

I just don't see him EVER telling people to get their act together, controlling the back 4 and midfield etc. He may be all that but he isn't displaying captaincy or leadership qualities, compare him and Terry, Gerrard or Camelgob, at least they appear to care about what is happening when it's falling to shit around them.

His resignation.

Very constructive.

Fair enough the majority of posters are offering constructive criticism. I just think there are far more important area's to improve in our team than Dunne. If anything, he's probably one of the last people we need to replace in the current starting 11.

Also, right now our squad has nobody who is worthy of taking the captaincy of Dunne, so until Hughes signs a recognised leader then we may as well not bother discussing it.

Having thought about I now believe the truth is somewhere in between. Someone posted on here that you needed two different players at centre back - one who was more mobile and one who maybe wasn't but would be the last line of defence, covering for the more mobile one. Dunne & Distin was a good combination because of that. Dunne & Richards worked well for some of last season in the same way. Terry & Carvalho are a good example - Carvalho seems to cover a lot of ground whereas Terry relies more on positioning. Same for Ferdinand & Vidic.

Richards hasn't been up to scratch this season, Ben Haim has generally been woeful and Dunne has suffered because of it. I don't think Dunne is good enough for where we want to be (whereas I know you do) but he needs a better player alongside him.

I wouldn't say that exactly, just that we have other problem positions to sort before looking at Dunne (one of them is his centra half partner). And to be honest, if his form over the second half mirrors his form in the first I expect to him to be elsewhere next season (maybe will be the case even if he does lift).

There seem to be no lengths to this one: if I understand, what some folks don't want are two really mobile CBs, just one really mobile one, and one who is "not so much"? That's a recipe for success? This is either / or? It's one thing to recognize that combination as a matter of fact, it's absolutely senseless to argue there is some principle involved in this.

Speed, armour, firepower. You want all three, all the time. If you can't get them, don't try and turn an absence into a positive!

You need a lot more than physical attributes to be a good defender. Positioning and nous is just as important, and a combination of the two (best displayed by the Dunne/Distin partnership) can be very effective.

Agreed, and which of our defenders possess either?

Dunne and Richards possess speed and power (although Micah does appear to have lost a yard or two). Dunne possesses positional and tactical awareness. Nedum is probably the other one that has all the "tools" you need.

Leadership on and off the pitch..............

Sort out the defensive problems on the pitch, and...

The supposed player factions need to be united into a team, coz we know we can play if we play as a team.

For him to have Ireland 7 on his back as reward & recognition for his fine form this season.
