What has the UK become?

The issue with tories and the difference between them and labour is that tories are all about the PR and the optics. They don't really care about the detail or making things work as bottom line is they wont want to fund it. Any conversations around making things better ultimately lead to discussions around funding and at the high level they just want to cut tax so the answer will be no - or make it look like we are doing things. So you get endless announcements about initiatives but its all the same budget just getting re badged. And politicians detached from the problems as they don't want to discuss the reality of the solution.
They’re just in the spin phase, where they throw out a few policies that will rile certain types, focussing their gaze elsewhere while they continue to bleed the country dry.

The entire Country seems to be on the bones of its arse. Pot Holes everywhere, litter, traffic. Where I live no public transport to speak of…yet every spare bit of green land being built on and our local plan seems to offering only improved cycle lanes links to the next large village…why would you ?
Before I retired, I was fully engaged in work…rushing around, travelling, long hours etc with little time to lift your head up and look around. When you stop and are able to look at how things are, it‘s a fucking shock. I’m less negative about people though, I don’t think things have changed that much…lots of hardworking kind and helpful people around and a lot of the young kids are nowhere near as bad as they are painted. Society is portrayed as being hugely polarised on every important subject and the various tribes demonise each other as “evil”, “grasping” or “feckless” or whatever label fits but the reality (away from the internet and media) is not like that at all. It’s really important to look for the positives and the joyful things in life, and be confident in the face of endless streams of doom and gloom seemingly coming at you from all fucking angles ! My Dad used to always say “it’s a great life - if you don’t weaken” and I’ve found with my own children and grandchildren that optimism, positivity and confidence are contagious and helps face the challenges the World throws at you.

So both parties are promising to be more authoritarian and crimininalise more young people and your argument is that the Tories don't really mean it but Labour do?

We’ve become accustomed to staying quiet “do not rock the boat do not protest or support striking miners” miners that was the 70s generation
But we all sit back and watch the current No10 incumbents destroy our essential services “Heartbreaking“
We are paying for ministers to wreck the NHS, Education slowly being privatised by the back door in favour of the US model and blaming immigrants for it all.
The news is nothing but Tory propaganda imo but sadly let’s face it we don’t care enough.

Meanwhile in France, Bordeaux’s town hall is set on fire because of plans to increase the retirement age
I think he was referring to this baseless Daily Heil reported rabble rousing article - sadly the easily led such as him believe it without recognising their inbuilt bias

I’m not quite sure who is being easily led or how it refers to public protests, I’m the last person to be easily led I was defending immigration and a discussion on riots and how the French behave towards there government where we accept legislation meekly or some of us do.
Wrong choice of words that’s all :)

Part of the problem is that people are all too ready to tolerate, accept, even approve of lies as long as they like the lie or the liar. That is why a still-substantial minority think Johnson is ace when anyone with half a brain can see he's an incompetent, selfish, lazy, con-artist who would sell his own granny if he could get a price.

The second problem is that a lot of people think they know far more than they actually do. The Dunning–Kruger effect. This is why every cnut you meet is an expert on macroeconomics, foreign trade arrangements, local government finance, medical science, education, who Pep should play on Saturday - you name it. It is tending to make the country literally ungovernable, and unscrupulous politicians are making use of this for their own nefarious ends.

when some people said NO the govt mobilized the forces of the state to crush the miners and used the miners strike as a vehicle to turn the populace against being organised for their own ends and were able to use that foothold to maximise market forces as the answer. There was a brief respite when the anti Poll Tax movement changed govt policy but they still forged ahead and we are ever worse off as a result - £11k per family pa since 2010 alone

A lot of this is down to our vile media.

But a lot is also down to the national psyche. For whatever reason, England contains an unusually high proportion of forelock-tugging cap-doffers who identify with the elite rather than with their own interests. Of course, nationalism encourages you to think you have more in common with Jacob Rees-Mogg than with a German or French worker, one of many reasons why I reject it as a philosophy.
