What was your first 'proper' job & how long did you last?

Started my first job at a car valeters, but the company also did carpet cleaning in pubs and that, after hours service, but one Saturday this flash **** came in a black Audi,I'll always remember caked in horse shit, and I mean proper stuck straw like shit.

It wasn't coming off with the jet wash,so I got the brush out and scratched the roof to fuck.....didn't last much longer after that after the customer came back in kicking off

The memories,jesus it's 28 years ago ffs

Throughout College and Uni I worked as a barman in my local Working Men's Club, started there in late 1993 and lasted about 5 1/2 years (basically until I got my first full time job).

First full time job was with the Cooperative Insurance Society, working in their Pensions Review Department. Technically, as far as continuous service is concerned, I'm still there, although I've changed departments, and been outsourced to a company which has been bought out, and merged a couple of times! Remember my starting salary was £13,800, which was a shit load of money to a young lad still living at home, having been on approx £60 a week for my bar shifts! Coop used to pay weekly back then so every Friday after work was like going out on payday, used to get pissed in Manchester City Centre every single week! In fact, Coop used to insist on paying wages only into a Coop Bank Account, which took them 6 weeks to set up! So, for my first 6 weeks I had to collect an envelope with a weeks wage in cash in it, on a Thursday, from an office in our building! Most of that ended up in the pub.

Insurance Brokers as an office junior, from August 1980 to May 1981. I remember making lots of brews three times a day, and reading the NME on a Thursday lunch break. Happy days ;-)

When I was 16 I worked for a removal firm for 2 days. Worked with 2 of the scruffiest set of bastard's you've ever seen, think Jeremy kyle guest meets the hills have eyes. I left after an argument over a Viennese wirl.

I had a summer job in 1975 between leaving school and starting my apprenticeship. The job was at Milletts on Deansgate, had a great time messing around with the tents down stairs. Some really pretty girls used to shop there as they sold decent jeans.

First paid job I had was as a summer job as a Kitchen Porter (pot washer!) on army training camps. At the time, I loved it: it paid £120 a week, and you were provided with full board and lodging at the army camp for free. Looking back, it was a bit shit, as it was a 6-day week, and each day was ridiculously long - breakfast duties 05:00-09:00, lunch 11:00-14:00, and dinner 17:00-21:00, so a 65-70 hour week. On the plus side, I was away from home for the whole summer, and got my first shag while I was there from one of the waitresses!

My first full-time job was as a research chemist after graduation, in the lab of a company making Pharmaceuticals, and I lasted 4 years doing that before realising most people were better at it than me!
