The school and the church. We left the area in '82. What's on the site now?
Mostly waste-ground. I'm not sure how far back it went towards Beresford Road, because there's a SureStart there now. Was the church pretty much on Hamilton Road, and the school behind it?
Yeah; that was pretty much the layout. From memory you could only enter the school off Montgomery Road, but the curch had a couple of entrances; one off Hamilton Road and one via a path between the church and the school. And the church hall/social club was underneath the church.

Haha, Andy is one of my best mates. Did the Palace nightclub in Leve for years when he was a young lad. All blues his family, except for one of the twins.
He did Kevin Davies' wedding a year or two and was offered three grand cash to play another hour or so at the end of the night. The hotel manager wouldn't have it, though, even for a grand of the cut. Smurf was gutted!
Aahh the Palace,Manchester imitating the wild west.

Bloody hell jim, you've got a great memory, that's spot on. Spent many a night in the social club as a kid, it was a big football parish at one time with teams from under 12 to under 18s, and we always had a footballer presenting the annual awards. Brian Kidd, Mark Lillis (used to play for St Roberts but not from the area), Kenny Clements, Big Alex, Pat Crerand (boo!) all did the end of season do. Remember Kidd getting quite pissed. Lillis was sound.
Another name from the Hamilton Road area was Chris Ofili, the Turner Prize winning artist (the one who did the infamous painting of the Virgin mary out of elephant dung), he grew up in Portland Road.

I don't think there is a "nicest" part, all areas have their good and bad bits

Sure, Didders is really nice, but it's also ridiculously pricey, and you still have a bloody good chance of having someone break in and nick your Merc from your driveway at night. It might seem nice, but insurance premiums are still as high as everywhere else. And it's full of twats. Don't forget, some of the neighbouring parts of Burnage and the Heatons are a shithole filled with right scumbags, and all the top dog organised criminals live in Didsbury, and they will employ said scumbags to do their dirty work in the local area. South-west of the Parrs Wood complex alongside Kingsway is probably the best area of the lot as it's surrounded on all sides and thus a bit more secluded.

For me, I always pick the nicest street in a shit area. Cheap house prices and it's nice enough to live there. I bought a house in Moss Side and literally two streets along is the crack capital of the area. My street has lots of families and no prossies or crack dens. It's all right. Apart from one very strange incident on the day I moved in, I've never been burgled, mugged, hassled, or even talked to by anyone who was remotely unfriendly. And I've left the back door wide open all day once (forgot to close it). Generally don't tend to get people breaking into houses there in case it's a drug den and they get shot.

I would never, ever again live in Longsight.

Even Falllowfield/Withington is improving slightly as students are moving into town, but it's still burglary central.

I am aiming to move to Chorlton (Brantingham Road area) as it's OK and still not too expensive. I have a feeling the Metrolink will artificially raise prices around there though.

Used to live there, Winwood Road and you're right it is nice and secluded. I personally think West Didsbury is the best place to live in Manchester or Chorlton.

Paradise was on the same side as Blue Moon, I think Mirage was the one accross the road. There's a Sanam there now...all snazzy and new.

I live off Hamilton Road, opposite a church.

I used to get the 192 to Slade Lane and walk up that way. I hope it's calmed down around there, now. I ended up moving to Baghdad for a more peaceful life.

-- Thu Nov 03, 2011 2:42 pm --

Is this the Guy who is/was a Lib Dem Councillor in Lev? I knew his face and he would always say hello when I passed him.

Young, Gifted and Green Nights at Levenshulme Palace! The one band who won it went on to be signed and did OK.

It's a veritable Oasis of Calm nowadays, compared to many other places nearby.

Nah, Andy Murphy is no politician, he's a DJ.
I think you're thinking of Lawrence Hennigan who owns half of Levenshulme. He had The Palace, still got the Pack Horse, M19, The Union, Hennigans Bar. I think his brother is a councillor.
