For me the 4-2-4 formation is way to open and we lose the effectiveness of Toure who is having to play in the midfield two. But as we don't have a real world class cm to play behind him ( Barry and De Jong combo isn't good enough) we play with him and a dm in the midfielder two. Imo the reason we're after De Rossi is so we can play Rodwell/Barry/Milner/De Jong alongside De Rossi and push Toure up the pitch which give more protection to our back 4.

Hart
Richards Kompany Lescott Clichy

Rodwell De Rossi

Yaya

Silva/Nasri Tevez Aguero

only theeeeeessseeee

Midfield two with NDJ is very different, something like that:

Its a very good formation ( we won the majority of our game last season with it) but imo a 4-3-3 would suit us much more if we could get De Rossi in or someone of him quality.

There's nothing wrong with our defence. They're the same players that turned our season round last year. How suddenly Lescott can not be good enough as I saw someone say is beyond me. Yesterday, obviously we weren't defensively at our best, but Southampton had 2 shots on target and scored them both. Apart from their goals, Joe didn't have a save to make. I thought Vinnie and Lescott did alright, Clichy was getting forward and Zaba looked a bit off the pace for some reason. But we wouldn't have conceded 2 goals if we had killed the game off earlier. We should have had 4 by the time Lambert scored. If they have already conceded a hatful, their first thought would be damage control, not go all out and get a consolation. But we didn't take our chances and once they got one, they had the momentum and knew they could get another. Then we pushed for the equaliser and the winner and I think we made Southampton look better than they were. We pushed so many men up to go and score and left so few back, that they looked more dangerous than they are. The first goal should have been dealt with and cleared before it even fell to Lambert, even though you have to give him credit as it was a quality finish and Joe had no chance. The second could have been avoided, but they broke well and in numbers, but nonetheless we should have cleared it before it even came out to their lad on the edge of the area. We finished the game with a team that wasn't well balanced at all. We had 3 strikers on the pitch and 2 midfielders in Yaya and Nasri who are more offensively minded, leaving Rodwell as the only real defensive midfield player out there. The full backs, even in the final minutes, were still pushing up and at times losing the ball and putting us under more pressure. I think we brought a lot of the pressure on ourselves yesterday, but it isn't like we were outplayed. We were hit with 2 sucker punch goals, but we had over half the possession, a hatful of guilt edge chances and limited Southampton to scraps. It is the first game back, it will get better there's no doubt about it, but there isn't anything wrong with our defence. The QPR game and yesterdays game were the same in the way we conceded, the opposition breaks away and nicks it because we're so focused on getting back ahead. But end of the day, it was another magnificent comeback from the boys and I personally am excited to know that we have this winning mentality now, and we know that we can get a result even if behind. We were the better team yesterday, we deserved to win, should have won by 4, and didn't play that badly at all. Over the next few games we'll sharpen up a bit more and hopefully those 2 goals we conceded will be a bit of a wake up call and we'll be solid at the back again. But I think we won't concede like that next week, we took Southampton for granted at 1-0 and we thought we'd go and score more and see the game out. Against Liverpool, a stronger team, away from home, we won't be as complacent and hopefully we'll score the goals we need and keep it tight at the back.

Interesting that Mancini focused on the missed chances, the failure to go 2-0 up, rather than the goals conceded. He seems to have lost his love for 1-0's.

Rodwell wont be starting games for us. He started yesterday to see what he was like. Barry and de Jong will be ahead of him. I don't think we'll be signing De Rossi neither.

It was clear several things came in to play yesterday.

The first thing to notice was we weren't sharp enough. This is just a first game rustiness that will soon go.
Second, we were so far up the pitch and dominating possession that we were always going to be vulnerable to the counter attack.
Third, it was their cup final. Newly promoted and playing the champions. It will always give them that little extra boost.

All last season we were a little complacent against the "lesser" teams. This costs us points, and was frustrating to watch at times. The good thing is that we have the quality to claw games back. At no point yesterday did i think we wouldn't win in the end.

I'm not sure why, but some players just seem to hit the ground running, yet others seem to take a few games to get going. Tevez and Nasri seem to have their mojo back, Zabba and Aguero never lost it, Lescott and Silva will get better game by game. Their are no words for how commanding Yaya is.

We are getting greedy. If we are not winning within the first ten minutes and don't go on to smash somebody 5-0, we are in crisis. So instead of worrying about conceding two goals to "lowly Southampton" (who may be better than people think), we should be talking about the great way we won a game by coming back from behind etc...

Watch Yaya doing his pretend running when they had possession second half. When he plays deep he doesn't work hard enough when the opposition have the ball and instead lets the opposing midfield get goal-side too easily, thus exposing the defence. With a rookie next to him it was more noticeable. In contrast, with the ball there is no-one better.

I still prefer Yaya to play off the striker against better opposition, with the likes of Barry and DeJong behind.

Collapsed????Hart's, Cichy's and Lescotts first 90 mins since may and Kompany had a tweak pre season...CALM DOWN..

Not too worried about the defence it will be sorted with a few more games.

I'm more happy with the forwards and Kompany seem to be growing in confidence of turning around any silly goals concided.

We should have been 4 nil up by the time they got their first on another day it would have been 6-0 easy.
