What's your favourite boozer and why?

Really difficult to choose one as I love sampling loads of pubs to either socialise, go somewhere that sells a decent pint with a varied choice or somewhere with a good atmosphere or interesting architecture.
In Manchester I love the Crown & Kettle and Northern Monk for interesting beer, and The Britons Protection & The Pev for history & atmosphere.
In my hometown of Stafford I love The Devils Taphouse for varied beer & The Sun for the perfect pint of Plum Porter.
Whenever I travel around anywhere, I do my pub and beer research in advance & I'm therefore rarely disappointed.
Love a good pint (or whatever the local glass size is) in any independent pubs around the world.
Hate chain pubs and fake Irish pubs anywhere other than Ireland!

That’s a fair point. Personally, a boozer is a pub, but what do I know?…

Mission Mars are the among the best operators in the business. The Schloss in Manchester takes about £200k a week, the one in Birmingham £250k. Absolutely insane amounts of money.
Not surprised with what they charge for absolutely everything…. I loved a good pub in the eighties (which was before my legal drinking time) used to get dragged round a few on a Sunday afternoon by the Ol’ fella, it was his way of getting a few sneaky ones in, every single one smelt the same, every one offered the same as the other, right down to the crackers cheese & pickles in small packs, and they all had similar characters in them. Most places had a road or lane with umpteen boozers on, but the decline started in the nineties (when I started sinking a few) and every local I ever had eventually closed. I’m easily pleased these days & prefer a place with people in it, if possible live music, and friendly bar staff

All my favourite pubs are no more.

There was the Coach & Horses across the way from Piccadilly Station, which was handy when I was at the Manchester Poly Aytoun Street building. Made Mary D's look like the Ritz Hotel but the landlord did a tonking pint of Tetley's, plus there was a dart board. That went to make way for the Metrolink line.

Then Tommy Ducks when I started work. That was shamefully demolished overnight to make way for Barbirolli Square.

When I worked down in London, there was a great pub called The Clarendon across the road from where I stayed in Pimlico. Great mix of people, good food and beer. That became a boutique hotel.

The only regular one that's still going that I like is The Church in Prestwich.

Used to be the Fringe Bar on Swan St. Real ales real characters, although not been in for a few years. Now it’s the much more laid back Wiseman’s Bridge Inn next to the beach and sea in sunny Pembrokeshire. Sat outside in yer City t shirt, great!

You are quite the jinx:-)

RIP the Church

If you asked a hundred different people for their ideal pub you’ll get a hundred and ten different answers ;-)

At one time I could have named a dozen in Manchester alone, but they have pretty much all been demolished. Ancoats in particular has been fucking devastated.

To be honest, I struggle to offer a crown to what is left. The Hare and Hounds, near Shudehill, is a proper pub with cheap beer. It's just a tad scruffy. I suppose I can tolerate the City Arms. Mr Thomas's Chop House, or whatever they call it now, is good for food. For an all-round pub, I would choose the Marble Arch.

Away from Manchester, I would offer the Swan With Two Necks at Pendleton - the one near Clitheroe. Or maybe the Berkeley Arms in Tewkesbury. A great pub, but be careful with the cider or you'll be peed as a newt in no time.

If you run a pub, as I do, you can create the pub of your dreams and just hope others like it too …
In a quiet rural village. No food - just pork pies and pickles, dogs only on leads, no kids after 8pm. A tv in the corner - only switched on for live sports. Darts and dominoes. No muzak, just great music that’s loud enough to hear but no need to shout over … the fall, stooges, fontaines dc, the doors, chameleons etc (although great Blues music goes well with a pint). Good real ale, great Guinness. …oh, and the most important thing … keep it a well kept secret. It’s not about getting rich but getting by with a smile on yer face ;-)
Blues music? Great. The rest...I'd walk out. Good real ale or not. That's your choice of music foisted on the public.

Apart from the music this sounds like a pub my mate runs. He bought it 8 months ago. Small village, nothing apart from pub, church and around 300 houses. It's slowly becoming the village hub. Coffee mornings, parcel drop offs, pie nights etc etc.

He's having fun. Loves the lifestyle and the switch from a busy London life. And of course the peace and quiet of a very small Northamptonshire village.
