Where Would The Best US Major League Soccer Team Place If Competing In The Premiere League?

The MLS should open up to promotion/relegation to the US Soccer league for a start.

Viewing figures are going up in that league because of the banality of MLS.
I think this is correct. I've been to a few Oakland Roots matches and the support base is strong, the tickets cheap, shoehorned into a stadium not fit for purpose but no one cares -- it's a ton of fun -- probably no surprise given the abandonment of Oakland by the NFL (TWICE), the NHL, the NBA and, now it appears, MLB. You can't even get tickets to Sacramento Republic -- their fans are crazed. A lot of the joy of the lower leagues in the UK and I'd argue more based on the handful of League One matches I've been to which haven't been libraries but have been quieter by comparison.

I will say this -- Portland Timbers have a real support base as do Seattle Sounders. That's a real rivalry. The Atlanta side does too. And I'm sure others as well.

But for MLS generally -- my GOD -- the drums. The motherfucking, shit-ass drums. They never stop. They are close to worse than the vuvuzuealas or whatever those awful things were called. Where are the songs? Where is the banter? Why the fuck are there DRUMS? It's horrifying.

Is soccer still considered a bit of a gay, nerds sport for boys to play in America, or has that changed a bit these days?

Alexi Lalas is facing criticism over his comments about the quality of teams in US Major League Soccer. Lalas (of whom I'm not a fan) claimed that the best MLS team would likely finish mid-table if competing in the PL. MLS fans think that their best teams would finish higher.

I don't follow MLS - even as a United States citizen. The last time I watched a MLS game - 6 years+ ago - it was boring. The quality of play was poor and it just wasn't enjoyable to watch.

So what do you think?

Would the best MLS team really be competitive in the PL? Able to contend for a mid-table spot?

I really doubt this - I think they'd be bottom table maybe even struggling to avoid relegation - but I don't watch MLS so I'm not sure.

Honestly I think they’d get relegated.

I think they'd give it a good shot if they were able to use the 2nd amendment. In fact I think they could blow away the opposition without a second thought.

Um, do you know how hard it is for kids to get into college these days? Any sport for boys or girls, if you're good, is a gigantic leg up.

But to your assumption: I went to an all-boys high school 40-some years ago and played, and our varsity team went to the state finals (though I didn't make that year's squad). I can assure you no one ever thought it was a "gay nerds" sport, whatever the hell that means. I played varsity golf too -- same story. Either you're confusing soccer with the Dungeons & Dragons Club (I also did that) or you're 107 years old and are thinking back to the 30s. Athletes are athletes.

Not sure what college, or varsity has got to do with anything I said?

I’m not making any assumptions. I’m going off hundreds of comments I’ve seen young Americans make over the years.

That they consider ( our ) football as a sport for girls and posh white boys and generally the opposite of what the latest word for ‘cool’ is. Not something that many ordinary working class kids aspire to, as they do in most European, South American and maybe African countries.

Are they all from Kentucky?

It probably is a “posher” sport here but I’m not sure why as you don’t need much to play. All the best sides I played against in school were the teams from the barrio.
