I saw virtually all Trautmann's career and, believe me, he was extraordinary. He kept City in the First Division single-handedly for years. Banks's save from Pele? Bert would have caught it, not pushed it over the bar. Yhe tragedy is, hardly any of Bert's exploits exist on TV footage.
My much elder brother, who admits to being really ancient, and saw Swift in his prime, says that tho' Swifty was great, Bert made saves that Frank never could have. Since then, Jennings, Southall & Schmeichel rank with the very best. Bob Wilson, who knows about goalkeeping, quotes Trautmann as his hero, and the best he has ever seen.
That's good enough for me.
