Who Is The Best Keeper Of All Time?

Shilton for me, used to hang from the stairs as a kid, reckoned it made his arms an inch or so longer than they should of been. Unlike most of the other keepers mentioned he played most of his career for unfashionable mid table teams and so saw much more action than other keepers. For a keeper he was also one of the top wage earners in the league, which he needed to be to cover his gambling debts

Schmeichel. Always wanted to be a keeper when I was a kid and, him being a rag aside, he was a personal hero of mine. Was over the moon when he came to City

It will probably be best to start a dedicated thread (not started one before so not sure how) - news will break shortly that Bert has passed away this morning.

Whilst not really a surprise the family had been hopeful of him recovering after recent heart issues

Dino Zoff.

It was a great moment for world football when in '74, Haiti's Emmanuel Sanon became the first person to score against him in 2 years at the Germany World Cup!

That has to be international football only.
Yeah. Probably should have said international football instead of world football...

Jennings was incredible. The best of his era, for my money.
Southall deserves more of a mention. If he'd peaked 10 years later, when Sky came into their own, he'd be getting far more votes in this thread.
Schmeicel (apologies for the spelling) was superb and he will get a lot of votes here because he's the one that we've all seen the most of. Undoubtedly, the best of the last 20 years, I think.

However, if both the great Yashin and Bob Wilson (who knows a bit about goalkeeping) nominated Bert Trautmann as the best, I'm only too happy to defer.

What about a 90 minute solo effort, Weaver against Ipswich, some of those saves were not normal.

As someone has already mentioned, it was the best individual goalkeeping display I have ever seen.

Nicky was brilliant that night. The two 'keepers in that game - Weaver and Richard Wright - were supposed to be the future of English goalkeeping.

Whatever happened to Richard Wright?

Iirc Banks, Zoff and Trautmann were brought together at the Ritz to be interviewed. The journalist commented on Bert wanting "Pie and chips" then started asking Gordon Banks about goalkeeping, Gordon said Why are you asking me? Everything I know I learnt from watching Bert.

So Bob Wilson, Gordon Banks and Lev Yashin all agree.

Best Keeper Bert Trautmann.
