Who should be the next leader of the Tory party?

With Cameron and May, I always got the impression they both felt they ought to be PM, without any other defining ideology. But nor did I feel they were in it for naked self interest, as Johnson clearly has been.

It'd be nice to have someone who actually seemed to have a strong set of beliefs and a coherent vision for the country, not someone who panders to the more extreme elements, or who wants to take out far more than they put in.
Conservatism is in crisis mate, it has no ideology. Back in the day I always understood where they were coming from, I didn't agree, but you knew they would be competent and govern in the interests of the nation rather than for their own people. Now the Tories have Libertarians, Evangelists, Thatcherites, One Nationers and they have always been split by the EU. Now I struggle to see what they believe in beyond cutting taxes and this spurious notion of levelling up. It is a party ruled by slogans and soundbites, probably Tony Blairs greatest achievement.

‘Levelling up’ has there ever been such a cringeworthy sound bite? It’s the basic admission that nothing exists above Watford in the political elite, Johnson’s rambling speech yesterday kept referencing it. Tory rule since 2010 and the increase in people using food banks and pushed into poverty is hardly levelling up for us great unwashed.

Great comeback.
Comparing a region with a combined GDP similar to the UK with a tiny principality.
I take it geography’s not your thing along with economics.
You wee quoting capita per head.
My point being, on a small population size it’s meaningless

It appears from reading this thread that our friend @halfmist thinks this forum is left wing. That has been an aged old argument on here since its inception.

Well then lets think about it, Manchester, the city where our magnificent club play beautiful football is virtually a Tory free zone, it is the home of the Trade Union movement, the city where Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels discussed political philosophy, the home of the co-operative movement, Peterloo, has a statue of Abraham Lincoln. Manchester has always been a radical city unlike our Scouse neighbours whose city was historically Tory.

Therefore one would expect that this forum is left wing leaning even taking into account the fact our clubs fanbase had a dalliance with the far right back in the NF days. Is it left wing now, probably not in the Socialist sense, but it is I believe on the Liberal Left, often attributed to metropolitism. It is certainly not as left wing as it was because a number of prominent Socialist posters left after a protracted dispute over Palestine/Israel. The left you see is intellectually vibrant and it likes to argue minutiae, hence the historical splits on the far left over the ideological positions of Lenin and Trotsky and the modern day splits between us on the left here now over Corbyn and Starmer.

What has happened though is Brexit and its the Supernova that exploded and its created a Black hole that sucks every political discussion into it. Getting back on to the point of the thread, yes the poll I created was slightly tongue in cheek, but interestingly it has shown that Defence fella is the leading light for the Tories on here, whilst those on the left obviously prefer Larry the cat to any Tory, but what is without doubt in mind is that the next Tory leader will have to fully in support of Brexit for them to succeed with the Tory membership.
The last time a Tory MP represented any part of Liverpool was in 1983 (in Garston and the former constituency of Wavertree).

I know what your point was. Your comparison was still ridiculous.
The combined population of the Scandinavian countries is well over 20 million people compared to a population of less than 40 thousand in Monaco.

Some are more equal than others
Always have been always will be.
Some will always succeed in life others won’t.
It’s in our DNA we were not built as robots
Some are happy to take risks others to be lead, that’s Society.
No matter how much certain people have a problem with that it isn’t going to change.

What is “Levelling Up”? What’s the level? How do we know if it’s up? Down? I remember Cameron waffling on about “winning the global race”. Who’s in the lead? What happens once you’ve won? How will you know? We actually have a Levelling Up Minister. We really do. It’s like they ran out of jobs to give everyone and made up this bollocks to ensure everyone had a nice title next to their name. Like being the rubber monitor at school once the bell ringing and pencil sharpening jobs have been snapped up.
