Who should be the next leader of the Tory party?

Can we add Rory Stewart to the poll? He was definitely showing an interest whilst discussing the possibility with O’Brien yesterday. Does a great podcast with Campbell btw.

Turdinghat has support from the US Republican Party.
Tugendhat also has strong European connections (French wife and dual citizenship) and was a Remainer. If the Conservatives want a more centrist candidate who will be good on the international stage and strong on Defence, then he’d be a good candidate. However, he still has no ministerial experience, so given that the departing Prime Minister has botched the domestic agenda so terribly, it might be better to appoint someone who can manage ‘Britain Britain‘ than another ‘Global Britain’ candidate.

The days of sensible Tories like him running the party are over until they get trounced in an election and are forced start again. They have all long ago been marginalised or hounded out.

True. It could well be 2030 before the party has a larger number of centrist Conservatives, and even then the legacy of Brexit will mean they will judged against that yardstick, so it could be 2035 before they form a majority.

As long as the following attitudes haven't changed amongst the membership there's no chance of a sensible leader.
"According to a survey by YouGov, 54% of party members say they would rather see their own party destroyed than have Brexit not take place. Sixty-one per cent would prefer to see “significant damage to the UK economy” and 63% would consider Scotland leaving the United Kingdom to be a price worth paying."
