I will probably regret being so honest but I'm not going to say I'm a lifelong fan... I didn't always support a premier league level/big club, wasn't into football enough as a kid to call myself a footy fan (everyone was pretty much a rag fan though), in highschool it grew on me but I never used to watch games on TV religiously, I loved playing it more and the atmosphere of going to games(used to get free tickets from one of my teachers to my local div 3 team and ended up getting a season ticket with my mates... so I do know what it is to appreciate the good times... having had to sit through shite hearing all the home fans moaning at the players lol) but I had no hope of getting to any other ground on my own really. I started watching games on TV more as I got older (and more lazy) used to like watching Arsenals style of play but would have never called myself a fan so I was pretty much a neutral for a while. My Dad has always been a City fan though so I think some of that rubbed off on me along with just the feeling that City is THE Manchester club, the whole Manchester derby thing made me feel like I had to pick a side eventually and City sat much better with me.
I have to say the City media team also deserve credit for the work they do, I've grown closer and closer over the years since they started the Inside City pieces and the tunnel cams it's all brilliant IMO. In fact I've never taken to a football team as strongly as I have City, how much of that is attributed to the behind the scenes stuff I don't know but it has definitely helped.
