Why did we let Zinchenko go?

Has this **** got mutiple log ins on this thread?

So much spin and revisionism of Zinc and his talent and necessity in the squad is of his level bollocks

He was a great squad player. He was also never going to be the answer to our LB problem.

Most probably saw a season with Cancelo at LB, supported by Ake and/or Gomez. On the face of it, no problem.

The issue hasn’t been letting Zin go, the issue has been Cancelo having a mare and subsequently acting like a big baby. Now the supporting cast have become the main event and some are thinking ‘if only we still had Zin’. Zin was also supporting cast. Ake is doing OK. Zin would have done OK too, but neither are/were the long-term answer at LB.

My main gripe with letting Zin go was the price we basically gave him away for. He wanted to go…fine but we got a pittance for him.

Love him as a person. His presence in the dressing room, how he conducted himself as a part of our club, how clearly adored he was and still is by all our players...I think there'll be a connection between him and us forever.

On the pitch, though, he was never really more than a back-up. He's a talented player but never quite hit the heights of seeming like a genuine regular option for us. Had some good games, had some poor games, spent a lot of time on the bench. It's not unreasonable to think we could upgrade on him to a better left-back.

He wanted more game-time, we couldn't give it to him, he chose to leave and we got a fair price. I wish he hadn't gone to a rival but still, I don't think it was bad business or a bad decision. It was done with respect on all sides.

The only real stupidity was in selling him without first buying a suitable replacement. I know we were after Cucurella but there was clearly nothing agreed or any significant progress.

Cancelo's always been inconsistent. Gomez is a downgrade on Zinchenko. And Aké's doing a great job defensively but is clearly out of position and we need the option of more going forward from a left-back.

It's needed sorting for years, Zinny wasn't the solution, but selling him without improving on him was stupid.

We are currently playing a back 3 with lewis tucking in next to rodri and it seems to be Peps game plan, for this Ake is perfect and plays the same role for Holland, when we revert to a back 4 he has been miles above anyone else and would keep zinchenko out of the team if he was still here by a long distance, Plus Ake and Grealish is working well as a left sided combo.

hopefully we buy a proper LB/LWB but zinchenko would not be getting games if still here as he doesn't fit the present system and was inconsistant as a outright LB

I agree, that's how we're playing. Not entirely sure it'd be how we were playing if we had an in-form specialist left-back, but I guess you never know.

No slight intended on Ake, though. He's been doing a great job and one of our best, most consistent players this season. And I agree, that combo with Grealish is really starting to click.

Only cost £1.5m or something like that. Maybe £30m was on the low side but not by much.
