Why do vets charge so much?

Bizarre take.

If you look after your pet in the same way you do your own health, then it should limit the risk of needing to go to a vet.

Obviously that requires buying your pet decent food and not feeding it Maccies etc, but you can't be surprised about trips to the vets if you don't look after your pets wellbeing.

Not really... I know loads of well looked after Dogs that have unfortunately broken a leg or bone somewhere or got really ill and owners been hostage to huge Vet cost/s

also it's often hard to leave themselves if you're going out, plus they're costly and i don't like picking up dog shit.

My Yorkie had to have a few teeth out yesterday.
My wallet is £625 lighter today.

To be fair, considering the education, training, insurance etc. Its not as much as a dentist earns and I would argue that they have to know a hell of a lot more and whilst some peoples dental hygiene leaves a lot to be desired its not quite on the same league as sticking your arm up a cows arse.
Yeah. Agree. This lad is only in his 20’s though and so fairly newly qualified. I’m sure his earning will increase if he wants them too.

About 18 months ago my dog had an x-ray. The price was £957. The vet came out to apologise to me and said that in her country the same treatment would cost 100 Euro.

My former vet was an independent practice taken over by Medivet, along with three other local practices. I began an online petition regarding regulation of vet fees. I consulted with the local MP who disagreed with my claim of a local cartel. Now, there are widespread claims of venture capitalists involved with practices, pharmaceutical supplies, post op care and insurance. They charge a lot because their business is profit, not care.

The way it has been explained to me is that taking your pet even for a minor ailment is like going to see a heart surgeon because you have a cold (not that you have any choice).

A private GP would charge £100ph+ and a private consultant could easily charge £300ph+ so it's not that expensive considering the qualifications of the person. You also have to pay VAT.

Not a lot of people know you can just get a prescription off your vet then buy the medication online for a lot cheaper, that's what I was doing with our cat for years

Pet insurance is the only way these days, without it our little dog would have bankrupted us over the years ..!
Part of the issue too, as so many people have it the prices have shot up. Like any insurance job big premiums are added, which are now the norm.
