Why does Stuart Pearce hate City so much?

The fact Pearce is the worst manager City have had in my lifetime says a lot about how good we've actually been since I started following us (in 1999), to be honest. Things definitely weren't good under Pearce, and going to home games felt like torture sometimes, but in retrospect (this viewpoint is definitely helped by us having a big period of success for years after) I don't think things were as bad under him as they felt in the moment.

The fact that our worst season under Pearce saw us finish fairly comfortably in 14th despite having to rely on a bunch of journeymen and academy lads is probably enough for Pearce to argue that he did alright with City in tough circumstances. Think I've commented on this before, but the first six months of his tenure were actually really promising - we finished 8th in 04/05 and we were hovering between 7th-10th by Christmas 2005.

We had a solid mid-table team that was a bit inconsistent but could turn up against the big boys and, with better discipline, definitely should have made the FA Cup final in 2006. James, Richards Dunne Distin Jordan, Sinclair Reyna Barton Musampa, Cole Vassell (with Sun Jihai, Sommeil, Onuoha, Sibierski, Riera, and Fowler to rotate) was a good 4-4-2 team. Having to deal with Wright-Phillips' departure wasn't easy but we made a good go of it.

It was Andy Cole's injury and subsequent tantrum that derailed things in the end imo. Because that was when Pearce had to use his scouts. He had to get a bargain from the continent who could make the same impact on the club that Cole had done, but he failed in that task and was left with us needing to flog Fowler, James, Sommeil, Cole, Sibierski, Reyna, plus Musampa and Riera, to make ends meet. He was dealt a shit hand but didn't do enough to improve it.

In 12 months our most-used XI went from being that one I just mentioned to Weaver, Richards Dunne Distin Onuoha, Vassell Ireland Barton Beasley, Samaras Corradi. We had a solid back four but fuck all in terms of creativity going forward, basically no experience in attacking positions, and a squad full of players who knew they were gonna be on the way out pronto. Mpenza doesn't get the credit he deserves from our fans for saving us that season.

admire your optimism, has someone who did every game home and away under him i can hand on heart say he was abysmal

The 06/07 season was awful. I didn't go any aways that year (was only 12) but did every one of those home games we didn't score in. It was horrible to experience and Pearce's conservative style was turgid. It's the closest me and my mum ever came to not renewing. But in full retrospect he did an alright job with the state the club was in and I'm not sure if there's another manager (in our budget) from that era who would have done much better with the players we had.

Good player for us but he’s gone very bitter. I heard about what happened before the game but I never met him personally or knew him. Can’t say I liked him actually I very much disliked him so I don’t join in the the applause or Physco cants just stayed silent

lol. The anarchist JR advertising butter and crumpets.
Someone offers you 40K for a days work advertising butter and you are going to say no?
The money he received he put to one side to fund a PIL tour - kept band members and roadies etc employed. I've no issue with him flogging butter.

Sounds like positive financial expediency from a bastion of capitalism. Never mind the bollocks hey!

Then did a runner to Villa. Isn't he the only manager to have managed two sides who got relegated, in the same season?

As well as Saunders, Dave Bassett did it two years after McNeill, albeit not from the same division. Billy, meanwhile, may have done badly at Villa but overachieved at City given the resources at his disposal.

Personally, I think McNeill did well not to walk out on City until he'd done more than three years at the club. That, of course, is given the blatant lies Swales told him when he joined about the money he'd be able to spend. I understand fans resenting that he quit on us even though I myself blame the board 100% for that. However, while he was here, he put it a highly creditable performance. And I'll die on that hill.

I’d say about ten absolute classic performances under McNeill, including the Charlton 5-1 and Liverpool Boxing Day win in 1985. Plus Chelsea and Portsmouth away in his first and second seasons respectively. Plus the Old Trafford Derby when we came from two behind the day before the Full Members Cup Final. They’re the ones that spring immediately to mind, but I’d be surprised if there were more than double that in total. Don’t think that’s a brilliant return over three and a bit seasons.

The club was in a mess from top to bottom, flirting with administration.

He did his VERY LIMITED best, but clearly wasn't rated by the best players and was just out of his depth.

He was /is a chronicly shite pundit whose analysis and inability to string two coherent sentences together was/is embarrassing.

He looks and sounds foolish.

His bitterness of City is probably due to a deep seated inferiority complex mixed with anger issues.

Now a skint nonentity, easily ignored !!
