Depends which way you want to look at it.
The question is can Mancini EVER win us the champions league?
On the evidence of consistent disastrous european campaigns since his tenure began than you would have to say no. People have to look at the facts.

The evidence screams that he is out of his depth in the champions league. It's ridiculous to argue anything else.

Whilst his record in the knockout stages is unimpressive, let's not forget that Italian sides were hardly dominant through the last decade.

In four seasons with Inter Milan, he won 21 Champions League matches and has won a quarter of his Champions League matches with City. Does it need improving? Of course. To suggest he is out of his depth though is ludicrous.

2004-05
Inter Milan 4-1 Basle
Inter Milan 2-0 Werder Bremen
Anderlecht 1-3 Inter Milan
Valencia 1-5 Inter Milan
Inter Milan 3-0 Anderlecht
Inter Milan 3-1 FC Porto

2005-06
Shakhtar Donetsk 0-2 Inter Milan
Inter Milan 4-0 Artmedia
Inter Milan 2-1 FC Porto
Artmedia 0-1 Inter Milan
Inter Milan 1-0 Rangers
Inter Milan 1-0 Ajax
Inter Milan 2-1 Villareal

2006-07
Inter Milan 2-1 Spartak Moscow
Inter Milan 1-0 Sporting Lisbon
Spartak Moscow 0-1 Inter Milan

2007-08
Inter Milan 4-2 CSKA Moscow
Inter Milan 3-0 Fenerbahce
Inter Milan 2-0 PSV Eindhoven
CSKA Moscow 1-2 Inter Milan
PSV Eindhoven 0-1 Inter Milan

All this eulogising of Ferguson is wrong.

He's a good manager who for 25 years has been in charge of the richest club in the world bar none.

In that time he has won two champions leagues, both of which were extremely fortuitous.

In the same period Milan have won 5, Barca 4 and so on. In other words hardly dominating Europe.

I think you are missing the fact that Fergiescum didn't have anything like a stellar squad for much of his time at The Swamp.

Mancini has World Cup winners, Euro winners and CL winners in his squad pretty much from day 1.

He still managers to be as tactically inept in Europe as he always was.

Can't fault the guy domestically but in Europe....

A lot of Blues need to realise that he is not indispensable. We went thru all this with Sven!

OK lets start with McClair, Hughes, Stam, Kanchelskis, Ince, Giggs, Scoles, Van Nistleroy, Sheringham, Cole, Yorke, Keane, Robson, Ferdinand, Rooney, Schmeicel, Beckham, Veron, Cantona, do I really need to go on.

i'm not keen on some of bob tactics and substitutions and have said so from day one but it is vital we put all this talk of a change to bed. we need to show unity roll our sleeves up and win the prem again. bob to me has earned the chance to sort our problems out. that starts with a solid city beating the rags on sunday.

Don't mean to pick on your words mate, but really I don't think it's vital we put all this talk to bed. In fact I wouldn't say it was even important, or actually relevant. We can say what we like and it makes no difference.

ADUG will decide what to do, or not do, and all talk on here is banter, nothing more.

Couldn't agree more mate. I can't get my head round people getting upset because people have an different opinion.

We have to get behind him but sooner or later ADUG will want to win the champions league to elevate us on a global stage even further. Roll the dice stick with BM until next season but if we have another european failure pep or Jose could be sitting nicely in new jobs. Thats the conundrum which is why I think he has to win the league.

As someone pointed out on another thread, Morinho and Pep will have jobs lined up before the end of the season. The board will have to make a decision before possibly February if they want either of them two to replace him.

Probably, just like Bobby did last season.
There's no surprise in preparing for eventualities

He's qualified twice for the Champions League and in qualification 1 we had 10 points from a tough group which would have seen us qualify for the knockout stages in ANY other group that year.

In qualification 2, it has been an unmitigated disaster where we have not won a single game yet bizarrely managed to remain unbeaten at home.

In mitigation, and I could be wrong, but the draw was unprecedented in that the Champions of Spain, Champions of Germany, Champions of Holland and Champions of England were all drawn in the same group. This has NEVER happened before so could be argued as being the toughest group ever drawn in the Champions League.

and they, the press and the tv companies all read this forum, why the hell should we give them bullets to shoot our manager with.

he was sacked from inter for champions league failure.

At city I've watched us play maybe 18 or 20 European games under Mancini and I'm struggling to remember a good performance. Tough groups or not, we've been repeatedly out thought and outplayed, many times by teams assembled at a fraction of the cost of ours.

You can't spin it any other way than hugely disappointing. And there has been no evidence whatsoever of improvement or lessons learned.

The Guardian says tonight his job is not under any immediate threat at all and there is a degree of understanding from Khaldoon. But does say there is added pressure to win the league now.

Don't disagree at all; it is hugely disappointing but is it really the time to sack the Mancini just because Moo has fluttered his eye lashes once again? If we had done that last time Moo blew us a kiss, we'd have been left with a full English on our face wouldn't we?

Moo is a winner - we get that. However we seem to take it as a given that he will win us the Champions League. He might do better - get us to quarters/semis even a final but there is absolutely no guarantee. He failed to do so with Chelsea in spite of having a really good team and has failed to do so, so far, with Madrid.

Exactly how it should be given the current circumstances.
