Why would you cheer an arseal win today?

IM with original OP...

For me City are what it is about .. I don't care about the scum really and if they win helps us its fine with me..

I want 3rd not 4th simple..

Everton cocked it up one year

because 3rd only gains us a monetary incentive, yet rags going from a treble to fuck all gives bragging rights
No it doesn't, it means we can't slip up in the qualifiers because we won't be in them. Not sure how true it is, (not looked into it), but a rag friend of mine has it in his head we could face Bayern Munich in the qualifiers.

That rag is on the windup, we would face a non-league champion from the 3rd qualifying round.

Rubin would be the worst possible draw, then Benfica and then one of:

Ukranian league runners up
Romanian league runners up
Dutch league runners up
Turkish league runners up
Greek play-off winners
Belgian, Swiss or Danish runners up.

None of those are particularly appealing.

Maybe, but a City fan should want what is best for City, and if United winning means we have a better chance of finishing 3rd, so be it. I can guarantee you now that if we go out in the qualifiers, those saying its great today that United lost will be wondering what if they had won, making it easier for us to have missed those qualifiers. Some can't get over hatred though, which when it gets in the way of what is best for us is sad really.

We would be long shots to get third spot anyway, I suspect by the end of the season we'll be more than 3 points behind Arsenal.

And I can't see how wanting Arsenal to beat your local rivals gets in the way of anything? Who we want to win doesn't actually change the result.

Yeah I know that, what will be will be, granted. I watched that match today though wanting a United win, because it would have assisted us. I want what is best for us, no matter how it comes.

Are we more concerned with united NOT winning, than us gaining 3rd? As the cheer went up when rag ferris said the final score, i thought to myself, why would we cheer our rivals for 3rd getting three points?

The table tonight:

1 Man Utd 35 16 1 0 43 9 5 9 4 28 24 38 73
2 Chelsea 35 14 2 2 37 11 7 5 5 29 17 38 70
3 Arsenal 35 11 4 3 32 13 8 6 3 36 23 32 67
4 Man City 34 11 4 2 30 12 7 4 6 23 19 22 62

How it could've been:

1 Man Utd 35 16 1 0 43 9 5 9 4 28 24 38 73
2 Chelsea 35 14 2 2 37 11 7 5 5 29 17 38 70
3 Arsenal 35 11 4 3 32 13 8 6 3 36 23 32 64
4 Man City 34 11 4 2 30 12 7 4 6 23 19 22 62

Simple Glen.

Because many City fans would in an 'ideal' situation want us to qualify for the CL and Chelsea to beat Utd to the title. For this to happen, it was more likely that Arsenal beat Utd today, and we potentially take 4th at this stage. If we manage to finish 3rd then great. And yes it qualifies us automatically. Of course, there are equally many fans who dont give a toss about Utd winning the league as long as we qualify for the CL and win the FA Cup. However, I sense most, would prefer us to qualify and Utd to miss out on the title, and lose against Barca in the final of the CL, thus us winning a trophy potentially, qualifiying for the CL and Utd winning nothing. That would be a perfect season. If we have to finish 4th for that to happen, then I suspect many fans would accept that.

Oh and on the subject of being laughed at, imagine the scenario of slipping up in the qualifier, and getting NO european football at all!

Remember sneaking past FC Midtjylland on pens anyone? (And that needed an 89th minute own goal from them to get to pens)

I don't give a shit about the rags, i care more about MY club.

Silly point Glen re: Midtjlland. Different team we have now. There is always a danger yes, however, we could have equally cheered for a Utd win today, then City go and get beat against Everton and Spurs. All this is silly. It's about principle. City fans on the whole, will always cheer for the most ideal case scenario. And that is trusting us to finish 4th minimum, and subsequently, win the knock out game, and Utd not win the league. If Arsenal beating them, and potentially effecting us from finishing 3rd, means Chelsea have a greater chance, and we still have a good chance of achieving our goals, then many fans will accept that.

Utd NOT winning the league does still mean a lot to City fans.

The point is valid, no matter who we get, isn't it normally played around the end of july, beginning of august? Just what we need, a game that will not only shape our season, financially and in terms of players inbound,.......... in the pre season.

Lovely.

well glen yes you are right but that aplies to any cup competition regardless,i'm not expecting city to win the champions lge but were on the steping stone to attract even better players and rolled into the enjoyment the arse beat the scum and could lose the title

Why? As a scum win would've meant we were 3 points behind, with a game in hand.

-- Sun May 01, 2011 8:20 pm --
