Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

Well they've just had about 10 minutes about it all on BBC which although l was not really concentrating on it, it did seem to have a lot a virtue signalling. A woman losing her hair must be a big deal to her and really shouldn't be joked about at an event where everyone is backslapping everyone else.
Even Smith seems to be grabbing a bit of virtue for his apology with his actor's tears.
FFS it's on BBC again.
Aren’t you virtue signalling by suggesting what should and shouldn’t be joked about?

Is virtue signalling as a phrase only used by people that don’t want others to point out how nasty some people are?

I think it was a cruel joke and pretty harsh on Jada
but Comedians are under increasing pressure to tow the line with jokes, especially at awards ceremony's like Gervais successfully does - so you can't blame Rock really.
Smith's reaction whilst understandable was the wrong way to react, he's apologized, Rock isn't pressing charges - everyone moves on.

And this is the problem for a lot of people.

No repercussions for Smith. And then you've got backward cunts saying it's acceptable to hit someone when you don't like what they've said.

well actually, my previous post i said Smith deserves some form of punishment as you simply can't do that

so hopefully he does.

but lets not get carried away and give him constant barrage of abuse, his wife was completely shamed about her medical condition. Smiths reaction was understandable but not right.

It was a fairly tame slap and he's apologised sincerely for it. Personally, I think that should rightly be the end of it.

Although if he'd gone up there and decked him, I'd absolutely agree he should be facing further action.

All the stills show what looks like a movie slap, the way Smith's arms and hands are, the way he leant into it, also Rock's face is a sell, your head wouldn't turn that far if someone slapped you.

I'm now calling fake. To boost the tv viewing.

Why are you using American English?

he's apologised sincerely

I think the fact that anyone would consider anything about that apology to be sincere speaks volumes and might be quite the indicator as to why these people are so often allowed to do whatever they want with no repercussions.

I just don't get how anyone buys into the facade. Spent half his career complaining about people swearing in music and violence in films and then goes and does something like this. There's a bit of Bill Cosby about all of it.

That’s a little harsh. He’s not drugged people lol.

He‘s not wanted to promote violence in his music. He probably didn’t want to do that yesterday either, but snapped.

It’s unlikely he’d do it again.

I just believe that people should be able to apologise their way out of certain errors of judgement. We all make mistakes and regret them the next day. As long as no one is put in any serious danger and no physical damage is done, I'm generally ok with people holding their hands up and accepting they've massively fucked up.

I don't see what it achieves to take things further in such circumstances, unless it's repeat behaviour, which I'm assuming isn't the case this time. Obviously, there's a line where this tolerance dries up though, and I accept that line is different for everyone.

It's the fact that the words he puts out there are completely at odds with his actions. This isn't the first time he's assaulted someone and chances are it won't be the last. And then there's the added dimension that, for whatever reason, people seem to swallow the bullshit and think he's a great person and role model because of the shit he pays lip service to. So yeah, very Cosby.

Personally, I think his wife's condition is just being used as a get out of jail free card and the idea that he "snapped" doesn't really align with what actually happened.

Lol ok. I’ve not done a psychology degree, so don’t feel qualified enough to evaluate his whole life.

I get that but I'd be far more willing to buy into the sincerity of the apology if he didn't give an insane acceptance speech right after the incident with crocodile tears, trying to make himself out to be the victim and blaming the devil.

The only way he gets away with acting like such a prat is because certain people want to believe it because they've grown up watching him in stuff and thinking he's likeable.
