Really ? I hope he turns out to be the best we've ever had. The fact that he can't make an Argentina squad not exactly blessed with GK talent makes me doubt it.

I'd obviously love to be wrong.

Fernandinho's struggles to get into the Brazil side shows how international caps/selection is such a poor indicator of how good a player is.

Completely different. Brazil rarely pick players plying their trade in Eastern Europe.

Argentina have never had a problem picking Spanish based players.

There was a story before the World Cup that Messi asked for Cabellero to be left out.

True or not, I know from what I've seen with my own eyes watching La Liga every week that Caballero is a top goalkeeper and better than Joe Hart in the last 2 seasons. Based on everything I've seen, he's also better than Argentina's #1.

Keep in mind that Sabella also chose Franco Di Santo ahead of Tevez in Argentina's provisional World Cup squad too.

And Samir Nasri, one of the best playmakers in the best team in England, isn't in France's World Cup squad because the coach finds him annoying.

It's a weird one. It makes sense to have 3 homegrown keepers so that we can have the maximum number of foreign outfield players. I guess they decided there was nobody good enough available?

There really isn't. It would be ideal to have 3 HG keepers, but there isn't one except Begovic (who I didn't even know counted as HG till someone on here said it, but who would want to start as a #1 wherever he went) who can really challenge Hart. And I firmly believe City intend on having a #2 not just to deputise, but to challenge Hart after his regression since the 2011/12 season. Hart has recovered from that awful spell but still isn't the keeper he was in our title-winning campaign IMO.

If Willy joins, he will start as our cup goalkeeper but Pellegrini has shown he will choose players on merit and Caballero is twice the keeper Panti is. Like every other position on the pitch, now there will be genuine competition for the #1 spot.

The way I look at it, City is in a slightly unique position that none of the HG outfield players are good enough to be regular starters. In my opinion, its makes more sense to have the best 17 foreign players that we can have, including a keeper. A couple of squad players (backup CDs, Backup keepers, back CM or AM or striker) can then take up the HG quota. Not to say that should be a policy per say, just that there aren't a lot of value/good HG players at the moment.

Malaga’s Willy Caballero to join Manchester City

Malaga goalkeeper, Willy Caballero will reportedly join Manchester City this summer, reuniting with his former manager, Manuel Pellegrini.

According to Manolo Lama of Spanish radio station, Cadena COPE, Pellegrini will finally land his coveted goalkeeper following the departure of Costel Pantilimon to Sunderland.

“Malaga goalkeeper, Willy Caballero will play with Pellegrini at Manchester City next season.”

Willy revaled this past fall that Manchester City have approached both he and the club ever since Pellegrini joined the ‘Citizens’ last summer, but has rejected their offers, instead remaining loyal to Malaga.

“I talked to Manuel Pellegrini before he left Malaga.

“I know of his intention to take me with him to Manchester City, but I was unsure whether he would stick with the same goalkeepers he had already or play me.”

However, it now appears that Caballero has decided to earn his final big-money contract and try his hand in England.

The 32-year-old is currently the highest paid player at Malaga and has a contract until 2017 which contains a €20 million buy-out clause, but it will likely be lowered to a reasonable amount due to the player’s loyalty over the past three seasons.

Cheers LC. Seems peculiar that Messi would want his countries best keeper excluded. Does the article give any reason why ?

As for Tevez, wasn't that due to the fact he was openly critical of the management team allied to a series of ineffectual performances ?

Re: Willy Caballero

This would be a great deal for City if it happens. Really good keeper, Very agile.

I thought he'd go elsewhere because he's a top quality keeper but at an age where he'd want to play

Re: Willy Caballero

Looks like Pellegrini is finally getting his man. Top quality keeper.

Will push Joe Hart.

Can only improve us as a team.

Not sure about the finances or the home grown quota but that's not for me to worry about.

Re: Willy Caballero

It gives the club an time to assess on our own HG keepers will develop and will provide much needed competition for Joe Hart.
