Wolves (A) Post-Match Thread

Good win, great first half, Ake looked comfortable. Walker, KDB, absolutely fantastic, with decent performances from others. Torres 10 mins too late. The yellow (it was never a yellow) for Mendy put him on the back foot against their best player.
3 pts against a good Wolves team is a great start.

The first half was like a performance from the 100 point season. Complete dominance. Superb football and Kev should have sealed the game really at 2-0 up.

We still have clear problems defensively as we were all over the shop for 25 mins in that 2nd half. I’m not sure how we solve it. There will be some games that are tight and we can’t be that generous in those.

Hopefully some of it was just lack of games. Mendy concerns me at left back. Positionally I think he is lacking and he seems to be lacking pace now.

KDB was superb again.
Think rock solid defences are a thing of the past - record number of goals in PL this week. We only conceded 2 more than dippers last season. With everything in the game designed to promote attacking football think it’s more important to kill the opposition off when your on top.

With the midfield 2, it seems having a play making DM (Rodri/Gundogan) paired with a more defensive DM (Dinho/Douglas) is the way to go, hopefully we can get Douglas back in next season, not sure what other defensive DMs we have.

The shakiness of our defence is directly proportional to the quality of the press.

We were supreme in the first half. The positioning of Rodri and Fernandinho stopped their chipped balls into their wide forwards, where they build up from.

That slowed their passing and our press was superb.

We physically dropped for the first 15 mins of the second half and we gave up a chance.

Then KDB got megged and they score from a decent cross.

We then dominated the game through game management.

Ake looked really good.
Best I’ve seen Stones play in about 18 months.
The number 25 seems really good in midfield.
Jesus got battered and got nothing, but deserved his goal at the end.
Mendy I thought played pretty well. Very good positionally and some signs of progression in his passing. Sure, Traore got past him a few times, but didn’t do anything with it as he is Traore.

All in all, a really impressive first game and not one I was expecting, but really happy we have our mojo and more importantly, our press back.
A fair report but not having it with stones

i SO want him to succeed, there is a world class defender in there. But he lost his man on 4 occassions in 5 mins and a better team would punish us

A better team and we lose after that second half.
But we were playing wolves and won the game so it doesn’t matter.
I know you’re not the most cheerful soul when it comes to City but that’s a great win and performance regardless of the odd issue we might have had in the second half.

Not having that. Stones was very good in the first half and aside from that 10 minute spell second half where they put us under pressure on our left side, didn’t put a foot wrong in the second.

Great all round first half. Hopefully our fitness improves as we go on and we can sustain that press a bit longer. Promising signs.
They targeted him and Mendy all second half and had endless joy, if not for them missing about 3 sitters we'd be sitting here wondering how the fuck we have thrown away such a dominant performance.

First half was superb, the pressing and intensity in our game was a joy to watch. Second half was a different story, we dropped off a bit and Wolves raised their game and could have got a point, which despite their showing in the second half would have been undeserved.

Our front three in that first 45 mins were amazing, fluid, full of energy and great pressing. Kev was just his usual self and it was a shame he didn't finish that chance to kill the game at the end of the 1st half. Very pleased with Ake who looked very comfortable and I thought Dhino and Rodders protected the defence well.

Unfortunately, Mendy once again looked vulnerable and was far too easily beaten. We need a new left back still.

Tough place to go and win so a very good performance. Kev is super human. Ake played very well, you never worried when he had possession. Gabby well deserved goal. Stones concentration a couple of times nearly cost us. But a decent performance. Thought Rodders played very well as did Ferny. Walker was superb.

Sadly, Mendy and Stones have proven time after time that they are simply not goo enough. The injuries have knackered Mendy and Stones never really got any better.

I would hate to go into this season with any unnecessary baggage, or at least without any backup in these positions.

Utter bollocks. Both had very good games. Mendy played most of the game on an unjust booking, Wolves were clearly targeting him for a sending off yet he kept his composure even when skinned and exposed by a badly tiring midfield and refused to be drawn into commiting the second bookable offence. You see the fastest player in the league run past him once or twice and he automatically had a bad game, Mendy largely kept him quiet all game and limited him to 2/3 dangerous runs all game. I fail to see what stones did wrong today that proved he isn’t good enough. Some people will slate a player for anything once they’ve decided they’re on their shit list.

I think Ake is going to develop in to a cracking player.

Calm, composed, and he times his tackles so well.

Some are criticizing Mendy for being skinned by the fastest Player in the League.

I will forgive him that.

The real problem for me with Mendy, is he is all over the show, his situational awareness is shocking. And i think he unsettles the defense. He is not a defender, never has been. The injuries robbed him of a yard of pace.
