Steph Houghton left out again…..WTF. This coach really does hate her. Jess Carter, Niamh Charles and Lotte Wubben-Moy are vastly inferior, cannot read a game, disasters waiting to happen with late tackles and offer fuck all in long passes and free kicks. They are poor.
This coach is going to be seriously found out in this tournament. Never once picked her best 11 in the Euros and constantly bailed out by ‘impact subs’.Quality of opposition was poor and other teams missing key players.
Midfield looks particularly poor - no genuine creativity. No ‘impact subs’. The poor quality of the other teams will probably get them to a semifinal.

Can we honestly say Steph has done enough to warrant inclusion?

I'm not sure.

Also, obviously when she was captain she'd have had a big influence over the squad and sometimes when the captain changes for whatever reason, it can be slightly awkward reintegrating someone in a lesser role. Depends on how she'd accept being backup and also how the rest would react to her.

Maybe the coach just wants backups who are younger (and probably quicker), so that they have the experience for when the following tournament comes round. Picking Steph would have been a short-term solution, with no guarantee of working.

Shame for her, but it's not a huge shock.

Delighted Steph has renewed, she was in great form when she came back in to the team last season and looks a class above most other women players with the ball at her feet. Well worth another year and beyond that she must come into the coaching setup for the future.

Still pissed off Wiegman has discarded her from the England setup.

That's down to the club obviously, but none of them have had one until after they've left, and for now she's staying, so maybe a bit of a premature question ?

Agree. I wasn’t expecting her to get one tomorrow, mate. :-D

Just making the point that she’s been fantastic for the women’s team on and off the pitch and ticks every box for a ‘statue candidate’.

Bet no other club has done this for a female player. (I could be wrong though).

Not at all my friend. Fair play to Arsenal.

However, she’s only played just over 90 games for them and only been there 6 years.

Makes the case for Steph even more obvious if you ask me.

Tbf it mentions its temporary and was commissioned by Adidas. A proper one for Steph seems a good idea once she retires. It'll be over 10 years by then, whilst being a leader - she definitely qualifies in my eyes.

A couple of things struck me from the Houghton extension interview (and also the recent Shaw one too). Firstly it seems like we're being prepped for a Gareth Taylor extension announcement in the near future. And secondly it seems to pointedly mention the harmony and togetherness in the current squad. Not sure if I'm reading too much into it but it doesn't seem like the usual run of the mill "we're all in this together & It's a great bunch" type of statement. More like a dig at some ego's having departed over the last year or so.

I agree - the talking up of the ever incompetent Taylor is ongoing. Numerous players have said positive things about him in interviews - directly contradicting what many of them say in private. Taylor has failed to deliver, the squad is not harmonious and the extension of his contract will only result in another poor season - we won’t win a league title with him at the helm - and there will be more high profile departures. Really don’t understand why the club doesn’t appoint a decent coach and push on with the Women’s team.

I'm really pleased for Steph Houghton who is a City and England legend.

Especially with the shoddy, disrespectful treatment she has had from England boss Sarina Wiegman who has messed her around before discarding her like a load of old trash. There's ways of moving on but that isn't a decent way of doing it - setting targets then moving the goal posts. Poor.

We love Steph at City and treat her with respect. Unlike Wiegman.

Steph is a great inspiration by her example and leadership to my daughter and many other girls and women who play.

Sarina Wiegman is one of the most obnoxious coaches in the womens game. No charisma, no personality and no tactical nous. This lucky chancer will be found out big time as her squad fail later this year. Treated Steph terribly. The poor standard of womens football and injuries to key opposition players has allowed this lucky coach to get away with it so far.
The idea that a team with Earps, Bronze, Bright, Carter and Zelem could be world champions……WTF. Wubben-Moy!!!

Wow that's harsh! I think she's brilliant. She's won back to back European championships with different coubtires and fostered a brilliant team spirit compared to under Neville.

The big calls she's made have all paid off. Be that choosing a relatively young Leah Williamson as captain, picking Earps over Roebuck and making some in game changes during the euros that raised a few eyebrows at the time.

Houghton missed out last season because of injuries ultimately and by all accounts (but understandably) took the news v badly. That combined with her age meant it was ways unlikely we'd see her in an England shirt again. That doesn't make Weigman a terrible person though.

Not a terrible person but a very very lucky coach….crucial injuries to both Spain and Germany bailed her out. Her first choice 11 were never good enough and she was bailed out by the poor quality opposition and the energy and pace of Toone and Russo. Daly and Bronze were very poor full backs who were constantly tested by the opposition and found out but were constantly bailed out by the centre backs and goalkeeper. To start Ellen White in every match was a joke.
This current squad is not up to winning the competition. Semi-finals if they’re lucky. Katie Zelem selected?? God help them if injuries to Walsh or Stanway happen.
interesting that so many Lionesses actually credit Phil Neville with improving their game and fostering a real team spirit.
If you really think that the majority of defenders that she has chosen for this squad are better than a now clearly fully fit Steph Houghton and that Millie Bright is a better captain (never been one I believe) then good luck to you.

The only thing I'll comment on is I don't think Millie Bright is good at all at football. A little trickery and pace and attackers leave her in the dust. In my opinion she made the team because she's mates with Rachel Daly. Maybe not many other options but she's not good.

She is only good when opposition wingers roast Bronze and Daly (who cannot defend) and whip in high crosses to diminutive strikers. Pretty much the last Euros. Popp of Germany would have revealed all of Millie Bright’s inadequacies but as we all know Popp was injured and missed the final…..lucky Sarina Wiegman. With her more talented centre back mate Leah Williamson missing who is going to pair up and direct this extremely limited footballer?? The genius Wiegman played Alex Greenwood as a substitute full back in the Euros!!
Houghton and Greenwood or Greenwood and Morgan or Houghton and Morgan is such an obvious set of combinations.
Wiegman will go with Bright and liabilities……Wubben-Moy, Jess Carter and Niamh Charles………….

Rose Lavelle will absolutely torch Bright for the 83 1/2 time if England plays the USA. I would not be surprised if Bright has nightmares about Rose Lavelle.

You're correct. Daly is a terrible defender. She can't do it. However, to me, that stems from not wanting to learn when she was young.

Defending is HARD. It takes work to get good at it and you have to be tough physically and mentally. So many who think of themselves as attackers don't ever care to learn.

I see it with U11 girls on my daughter's team. Oh, I'm an attacking midfielder. I don't need to learn to defend. Great young lady, keep giving away cheap fouls because you haven't a clue as to what you are doing.

The USA should easily win this World Cup……but are in transition. When England beat the USA the last time they played it was possibly the worst USA team ever. The NWSL is now in full swing and the quality of the USA players is obvious. Picking the best squad is the key for the coach…..but their attacking players have so much pace.
That England defence is poor…..midfield only marginally better…but attack is good. Daly was only ever played consistently as a full back by Wiegman…….huge mistake and WHY??
Rose Lavelle was one of the most disappointing signings by City. Entirely down to the totally useless Gareth Taylor.
