World Cup 2018 | 3rd July | R16: Colombia vs England Match Thread, KO 19:00 (BST)

look at his position, centre mid pretty much by himself, covering defense and covering every blade of grass - calm on possession, makes the right passes and gets stuck in.
wasn't much of fan before this tournament but more i watch him, more i realize how good he is.
Mine was a genuine question and i wasn't just saying how shit he was, i thought maybe i'm missing something that everyone else sees.
I still don't see it with him sorry mate but i'll keep watching him, maybe i'll see what it is in time.

Just because we were worse after he went off doesn't mean that that was the reason, cause does not equal effect and all that.

Against Sweden i think our best chance is to try and blow them away in the first thirty minutes (seems to be our main tactic so lets run with it). I would "genuinely think of dropping him" because in the final third he has been ineffective so far. I think it might be worth giving Rashford a start to see if he can do any better in the final third and to do so, we would have to drop one of Kane or Sterling, not sure even City fans would advocate dropping Kane.

If anything i'd play Rasford WITH Sterling, either side of Kane and go back to a back 4, LC or even Lingard behind those 3 and Delph with Henderson in midfield, Alli can't start again as he's been woeful, same goes for Dier. Youngs injury may mean that Rose now starts and the back has a better balance about it, tough call between Trippier and Walker.
He won't change it but we need control over the midfield and it's something we just haven't had, Sterling has been dropping in to make the extra body and once he went of we lost it, the change i advocate would allow us to be slightly more direct out wide and bring Kane into the game more where he'd be more effective.

This is bollocks. Sterling '0 dribbles' I can name one without flinching, he dribbled down the left and won a freekick for handball early on.

Stats in utter bullshit shocker.

He had another where he turned the centre back came across the edge of the penalty area looking for support found none and ran into a cul-de sac, and another where he brought it out of defence before releasing Lingard into the box - Lingard fell over. Thats just off the top of my head.

Sterling is being used in the wrong position and that is southgates flaw - he needs to be used as he is with Pep. Out wide, stretching the back line and getting the opportunity to run at the defender getting into the box

That said even last night it was glaringly obvious that when he went off, the whole movement upfront became stagnant along with the midfield - thus we turned to shit

Like Sterling, Alli is being asked to play in an unfamiliar role - and is struggling as a result. For Tottenham (I think) he plays in the centre just behind Kane - similar to the role Sterling is being asked to play here. So it seems strange that he isn't playing there whilst Sterling plays in Alli's position - still not his best position as he can struggle coming in from the left but at least it is a role he has played for his club - this little target man role is a strange one.

having said that - Englands big problem is a lack of a midfielder who can pick a pass and turn defenders - too often Kane and Sterling are having to come backwards and the forward runs from Lingard and Alli just aren't happening.

am i the only one not buying into this (its coming home) bollocks ??? england was crap going forward last night and apart from harry maguire and stones defending and attacking dead balls and free kicks we looked lost of ideas. we just don't have anybody in the mould of a silva or KDB in midfield to create and unlock better teams and for me its false and england will end up in tears very soon

Ali simply isn't as good as we think he is.
