World Cup 2018 | 7th July | QF: Sweden vs England Match Thread, KO 15:00 (BST)

Why?

Trippier has been one of England's best two or three players throughout the tournament. Kane is the tournament's top goalscorer and will always be England's best hope of a goal. Didn't score today but still played intelligently and unselfishly. Alli is clearly not at his best but is always a goal threat. His movement for his goal today was perfect.
That one went right over your head didn't it!

Hoddle did alright. Was one of the better England managers of the past 28 years, IMO. Was unlucky to lose that quarter final against Argentina. Matched them over the 120 minutes, at the very least - even with ten men. But for Beckham's silly sending off and the incorrect (IMO) decision to disallow Campbell's extra time headed goal, Hoddle would also have taken his team to the World Cup semi finals.
Sorry mate, I think we will have to agree to disagree on hoddle’s performance in that tournament. A bad public fallout with fergie and Beckham before the first game, poor game management against Romania meant a difficult round of 16 fixture (not quarter final!) against the argies (who had an extra day’s rest due to actually topping their group). I agree with your points about what transpired in that match, but we had some great young players and I question if they were managed right. Good player performances, bad manager performance sum up 1998 for me. To top if off the penalty shootout prep was not good enough (bare in mind this was 8 years after Italia 90 and 2 after Euro 96) and his post match character assassination of a young Beckham was unprofessional.

I think you've got to take into account the relative inexperience of the side and the lack of a real playmaker in midfield.

If we'd had one, i think we would have destroyed Sweden today.

Better England teams than this have got nowhere near a semi-final though.
With a good playmaker playing where Lingard does, I would back this team against any in the world

The good thing about this England team is that they're young enough to benefit from this experience in future tournaments.

Some of the 1990 team were at the end of their careers and wouldn't have played in 1994, even if we'd qualified.

Don't think the dog buggering voodoo seances helped either.

Several times today Sterling was away, waiting for the simple pass that even City's goalkeeper could execute & Lingard didn't even see him.

Works hard, decent technique, not much of a football brain.
Judging by his interviews and general demeanour not much of a brain full spot (I take it you mean Lingard?)
