World Cup every TWO years

So this story appeared yesterday:

An extra £3.3bn for who? It's very easy to make lots of money with other people's assets. And that's only up from £5.3bn, so they've somehow managed to not even double the money made, while doubling the costs, which proves that you get diminishing returns from something like this.
I saw that. Its easy to see why ‘not for profit’ organization FIFA have got a hard on for this.

From the article:
Delegates were told the overall financial impact on gate receipts, media rights and sponsorship revenues from a World Cup every two years would result in a predicted increase from £5.3bn for the 48-team tournament due to be held across three countries in 2030 to £8.6bn across a four-year cycle with two World Cups.
The meeting was told that Fifa estimate, on average, national associations would each be allocated around £12.1m in additional funds, although the precise method of distribution was not clarified.

A report commissioned by the World Leagues Forum in November said Fifa's proposal could cost domestic leagues and Uefa about 8bn euros (£6.8bn) per season in lost TV rights and commercial agreements.
On Friday Uefa published a report carried out by consultancy firm Oliver & Ohlbau, which said changes to the international calendar would see revenues drop between 2.5 and 3bn euros (£2.1-2.6bn) for European national federations across a four-year cycle.
Just looks like a cash grab from UEFA by FIFA.

If they get rid of the shit Nations League thing and have a different qualification route then it might be okay and mean less international breaks. The confederation tournaments (Euros, AFCON etc) should be the qualifiers for the World Cup. If Europe have eg 8 places then any team that gets to the quarter finals of the Euros qualifies for the World Cup. If they get eg 12 then they need to do some knockout matches to get the additional 4. Each confederation does their own thing. We only need qualification groups for the confederation tournaments then and in Europe they need to re-consider these pointless qualifiers like San Marino, Gibraltar etc. Just give them a minnows tournament.
Nah, that would mean if you don't qualify for the Euros, you don't get a shot at another big tournament for four years. The good thing about the Nations League is that you have more competitive games between teams that are actually on a level with each other. It's supposed to be an alternative to international friendlies, which were always a farce. Two hours spent watching a training game. What's the point?

Well I looked into it, and apparently in the 2018 World Cup, they paid clubs €1400 per player per day for their use. You only need to multiply this by 365 to realise that that works out at a fairly pathetic €511k per year. Now given that they are almost exclusively featuring the best players in the world, that's clearly a ridiculous amount that doesn't at all reflect compensation for the salaries of the players taking part. Some players at the tournament earn that in a week. I wonder how profitable it would be if they were required to pay the full salary of any player taking part for the duration of the tournament. Which of course is ignoring the main point, which is that it isn't supposed to be fucking profitable.

Oh yeah, I must be thinking about having the Euros every two years as well which won't work.

Yep. UEFA is made up of europeans, all have the Champions League and Euros to keep them happy. The biggest problem is too many games.

FIFA is made up of all sorts of non entity countries that have shit clubs playing in shit leagues and rubbish international tournaments (apart from the world cup). South America excepted to an extent. The money / assets are all in European football. This is a money grab from what are in footballing terms - shit hole countries.

Why Should UEFA agree to this when it just compounds the problem of too many games for the elite. There is nothing to gain by european clubs / nations in this and masses to lose. I'd back UEFA in breaking away if it came to it. Both bodies are corrupt but FIFA is worse.

Exactly. This is how FIFA has operated for years. Relying on votes from the likes of Caribbean countries to push through measures that countries that actually contribute the most to world football disagree with. Basically, in FIFA terms a vote from somewhere like St. Lucia counts the same as a vote from Brazil or Germany, but the person from St. Lucia has absolutely nothing to lose by voting for ridiculous things. They can also be convinced to vote for ridiculous things with a relatively small amount of money from FIFA's coffers. It'd be like running the country and saying that London and Keswick each get one vote on each issue.

Wenger self absorbed as always. Ridiculous idea only he and his employers and Dan roan thinks is any good
