Midland now the Metropolitan near Didsbury.
Grey Parrot in Hulme
Yates`s near Chorlton bus station back in the 80`s
A pub on the Falls Rd in Belfast - more like a shebeen with cans and two types of whiskey
The lively lobster on the racecourse in Sale
O`briens in Stretford .

That reminded me of the Spinners Arms in Hulme, quite a place in the 70/80's They had a parrot which they let fly round the pub, hence it was recalled to memory.

I used to live in Hulme in the 70's , and the Grey Parrot and the Falstaff were the first pubs i frequented even BEFORE i came of age , together with the Red Admiral ... they built the Spinners a bit later .... mind you half the time i only went in to use the condom machines !

Yep! sorry that be the one and the sticky carpetted one near the Arndale what a fucking dump .

Mersey way anyone ?

As a younger drinker my local was The Moston, which set the tone.
Also frequented
The 200 and Shiredale in harpurhey,
The Ben, Museum, Old Loom and Bricklayers on Moston Lane.
The penny black, Dover castle, mechanics, Waterloo and tanners when drinking with family from Cheetham hill and Failswoth Pole for a "posher" night out.
Unsurprisingly the rougher pubs of Oxford and Ramsbottom as described by the locals just didn't have the same charm.

And there was The Malt Shovels half way down Councillor Lane too. That was like The Jockey ofrom Shameless!

My cousins the landlady there.

Mental place

30 years ago 'The Malt Shovels' was my first ever legit pint that I ordered myself and was actually served without requiring ID, not surprised though, it was fuckin dead, I expect they were happy just to get a sale.

Loads already mentioned but the worst for me even though they were my locals were 'The Cock 'o' the North', 'The Benchill' and 'The Silver Birch', although they could be 'fun' at times, 'The Mountain Ash' could be a bit ropey at times too.

The Kestrel in Moston
Think of The Jockey in Shameless then times it by about 100

Pmsl : )
I lived about 25 yards away from the place when I was growing up..
Always remember looking out of my window at kicking out time, always guaranteed a fight outside....half the time it involved my old man lol!!
I think it is funny that if you grew up on a council estate (or rough area), they all had a pub like this....and you would have no problem going in your own...but not others lol
Had a few good nights in the Kestrel....Happy days!!!

How about The Star & Garter on Fairfield Street behind Piccadilly Station? You had to walk past a red light zone full of toothless smackhead brasses to get there and inside was a bit tasty if there was a Punk night on upstairs. You'd see Bikers too.

The Vavasour in Lower Broughton Salford, a public house where the landlord greeted you by offering you a fight with his son in the yard. A combination of gypsies, tramps and old haggered brasses.

The Flat Iron Salford, a place where you could sit with your pint and order your weeks shopping from the market to be robbed for you. A place with more to sell than the shops surrounding it.
