Demon soul's the tower knight boss. Depending on the order you attempt the levels this is probably the first big boss you come up against, just it's sheer size is intimidating and it's made even more so when it kills you in 1 hit for the first time after spending ages trying to navigate the walls dodging sweeping dragons spray fire everywhere just to reach it. The souls series has provided many more since then but that was the first and the best in my eyes.

Have another one that's slightly different to what the thread was intended for but still brought a wow moment. This one was playing a 40 person capture the flag match for what seemed like hours on resistance fall of man as part of a clan vs clan match. That game was my first experience of online multiplayer. Playing a game as a team, all communicating via headsets, developing tactics and seperating into mini attack and defence teams was brilliant, and every single player on both sides were some of the best players around at the time and relatively evenly matched. It defined a new era in gaming for me. I was never a pc gamer and i didn't have an xbox, the ps2 had online towards the end but it was very dodgy at best. The ps3 brought online gaming to me and resistance was the only game out worth playing for probably the first 18 months of the ps3's release.

In chronographical order (showing my age now).

Manic Miner (addictive) missed hours at the pub. Lords of Midnight (and Doomdark revenge th ough that could be easily won by a cheat published even before the game) ZX Spectum.

Lotus Esprit, Midwinter, Speedball 2 , Frontier, Mega lo Mania, Kick-off and sensi Amiga

Deux Ex, Obvilion , Far Cry , PC

Best atmospheric stand out game - FEAR pc - that little girl killing all the soldiers scared me shitless.

Best Stand out moment. DOOM the mirror.

My first chainsaw kill on Gears of War definitely took me aback. Brutal but ace! The Last of Us as a whole...The recent Walking Dead game S1 (Beautifully crafted story) GTA 3D etc.

But Valve, if I'm being honest are mostly responsible for the most "wow" moments I've experienced in gaming. If anyone is still adament games aren't for them then give the Portal franchise a go. Such innovative games with the portal gun mechanics and Portal 2 had me often laughing my arse off with Stephen Merchant voicing little Wheatly and J.K Simmons voicing the straight-talking Cave Johnson...and not forgetting of course the legendary GLaDos. All in all brilliant.

Portal 2 is one of my favourite games out of any game on any console. Brilliantly executed. First time I played it I was rather high and it completely blew my mind. It is my friend's favourite game of all time.

A must play for any gamer.

Nothing more recent sadly as nothing is worth spending money on cos if I spend more than an hour at the computer wife slaps me a says "Garden" :(

Not played for years, but Lords of Midnight was my favourite ever game on the C64. Lost days playing it.

In agreement with other posts about online games and the first time experiencing an online environment in that manner, i'd also like to add the original Guild Wars to this list (before any expansion packs came out).

I actually thought the starter area WAS the main game and when it got attacked and you were put out into the emaciated environment of the actual game....fantastic.

Wandering around in a party looking for a certain location with no idea to go. Spent ages and ages looking for one place only to eventually get there and realise we'd been wandering around it in a circle for a few hours.

Amazing game, the music alone was worth the entry fee.
