Yaya Toure - 2016/17 performances

When a player is old and finishes his contract, let him move on. You'll both be better for it.

Yeah that's what Milan thought about Pirlo.

This line of thinking makes absolutely no sense, which is presumably why you didn't give any real logic behind it.

He's been one of our best players, we most certainly would not be better for letting him go on a free today.

And given how we're already losing 6 others out of contract who will all need replacing, Presumably with young players, there's a massive argument that we could do with keeping 1 or 2 of the old heads around, and as Yaya is the only one who is actually performing right now, it's obvious that it should be him.

A 1 year contract on reduced wages, which is what people are talking about, is a compete no-brainer.

So, do we still want him to leave in the Summer or is a 1 year extension the order of the day?

He's earning a contract extension for me, against Spurs he managed to pull the strings pretty much on his own and he was good today. In fact he's been quality since his return, only had 1 or 2 dodgy games.

Have a feeling Pep will want to see him in the Champions league before making a decision on his future.

Anyway, top free-kick today Yaya.

Nonsense! There you go again biting more than you can chew.

Don't be silly. Both positions, yours and mine, are opinions. For every Pirlo, there are 50 examples of aging players kept too long. Demichelis is one of ours.

And stop with the red herrings. I Didn't say we should let him go on a free 'today'. That would be stupid. I'm however okay with him moving on at the end of the season and his contract when he'll be a sprite 34.

By the beginning of next season our CM core will comprise of David Silva, Fernandihno, DeBryune, Gundogan, Garcia, Fernando and Delph. I count 7 CMs

Let's see their age range: Silva 32 next year, Dihno 32. Fernando 30, Delph 28, DeBryune and Gundogan 26, Garcia 20. I'd say the spread of experience to youth is quite experience heavy.
So the 'Keep a few old heads around' logic is a bit Silly as we'd be keeping a majority of old heads in midfield if we did that.

Has Yaya had a nice swansong season? Sure. Is that a reason to keep him? No. Do we have experience covered at CM. Absolutely. Only a blindly argumentative Domalino can't see. That. But you are in luck, I'm quite in the mood today.

What we may need is youth and energy. Not an overstack of aging stars at CM.

And stop conflating positions with your '6 players leaving' claim. That mostly affects fullbacks, where we are losing 3. All the other areas are pretty well covered or will be. Losing an aging out of contract CM is not going to be an issue.

Yaya is good and helping us out now, but this doesn't mean he'd be the same next season.

You actually think he's going to go from arguably our best player since his return, to not worth having in 4 months?

Ageing only works like that in your video games. His stats aren't going to halve the day after his birthday.

we have Kompany, Zabaleta, Yaya and Silva in this team who could feasibly be called leaders. 1 is leaving, 1 is unlikely to be fit for most of the season, and if Yaya leaves that gives us just Silva, who has never been much of a leader.

There's currently Jesus, Sané, Sterling, Stones and Iheanacho u23. It's likely that we'll be replacing Zabaleta, Clichy, Navas, Caballero and possibly Kolarov with players 23 or under.

So that will be roughly 40% of the squad as young an inexperienced and/or having just arrived at the club

so actually, if we let Yaya go, we'll be lucky to have any leaders, any captain material on he pitch.

As you say both of our posts are opinions, but mine is thought out, and yours can't be, because if you spend any time thinking about it, keeping one of our best players on for only 12 more months - assuming as we are that the finances are acceptable - is painfully obviously the only correct choice.

Only if you are the emotional type who mistakes emotional attachment for logic.

Again, we have Silva, Fernandihno, Kompany, op
Kolarov, and Zaba who have all leadership roles during Yaya's haitus. DeBryune also is growing in stature on an off the field.

The feeble minded error you are making is in understanding how leadership works. Players mature and grow into it. And the aged decline.

Yaya could decline. He could continue being good but the logical decision would be to find someone who is better than an about to be 34 CM. Who wasn't great at hutlsing at 28 talkless 6 years later.

Again I repeat, our CM posions has 4 almost guaranteed starters in Dihno, Gundy, Silva and DeBryune. With good support from Delph, Garcia and maybe Fernando unless he is sold.

Of those mentioned, Silva, Dihno and Kev are already leaders. Gundogan will easily be a controller soon enough. We don't need aging leadership. It's a fallacy in your head.

Already o see natural leaders in Kev, Sterling, Jesus and Stones. You don't have to be 30 to lead, just be a leader. We have plenty of those as is.

Keeping Yaya will be an emotional decision. But I trust our front office has a long-term view and gets it.

No.

How do you still manage to not get it?

Even setting aside your buklshit about leadership, which you apparently just don't get, possibly because you've not played football? I don't know but it doesn't sound like it.

He's one of our best players. He will be one of our best players when the season ends.

It is not an emotional decision to extend one of your best player's contracts for 12 months. It's just common fucking sense.
