Tevez was different. At one point he was largely a blessing in an otherwise mediocre attacking force. He hated the rags and his playing style demands praise. However, it was always known he could be a bit of a cock. So no one was particularly surprised. Plus, the reasons he gave for leaving included being closer to his family which, true or not, couldn't be laughed at or considered disrespectful. Yaya has acted like an utter cock out of nowhere. That is why it is more shocking.

If he leaves it until after the world cup to communicate with the club and the fans, I think any apology (should that be forthcoming) will fall on deaf ears and that disappointment will have been replaced with irretrievable disgust.

People warmed back to Tevez pretty quickly - although never truly forgot his antics.
I suspect the same will be true of Toure if he returns. Fans are fickle, and if he's sticking the ball in the back of the net, we'll soften. Woe betide him if he has a few bad games though... the howling mob will be gunning for him
