Youth or Success

Not necessarily no.

I wonder what Utd fans' (who watched their reserve teams), view on giving Pogba a chance would have been, for instance.

Frankly, not bothered at what the rags might think, that was their player and they made a call.

I'm sure you know more about our youth than I do, but I fail to see how you believe you know better than those that are professionals in this matter.

Maybe, the names you are citing are decent prospects (maybe not), but those calling the shots have yet to agree with you. I do beleive however, that if they thought they had unearthed a gem, we would give him sufficient oppoprtunity. Outside of Nacho, it looks like the rest thus far have been filed as either, not ready or not good enough.

Realistically, In terms of homegrown talent, the best we can probably hope for is a Phil Neville-type, who plays plenty of games, but rarely features in the crunch encounters.
In the wider scheme of things, the days of a Gerrard, Giggs, or Carragher, will end when John Terry finally calls it a day.

That’s the way of the modern game, and whilst Bayern and Barcelona might still produce their own, the Premier League money will always demand instant success.

I'm not citing any names in particular, just using names as examples.

I'm saying I don't know, at all, & neither do they. What is more I'm absolutely 100% sure, without even a shadow of a doubt that they don't know. They have no idea. It just looks better to us, if they give that impression. They will know if a player is a 'wrongun' & they will know which players lack heart or are physically not upto it, at present. But at City, we have a lot of supremely talented players & they don't know which will make it.

And I'm calling bollocks on the 'if he's good enough he'll make it' nonsense which keeps being repeated on here time and again, & is the biggest pile of nonsense out of the whole thing & has never been even remotely true.

It absolutely isn't necessarily players who are 'good enough' at that age who make it. We have about 50 kids now who are potentially 'good enough'. Even some of the ones who are not amongst the top prospects are 'good enough', better than most of those kids who have came from City & played for years in the Premier League. Some of those players, people like Glen Whelan & Joey Barton for example, they have made careers in Premier League football when 100s of other City players miles better than them, haven't.

Why ?

Because they found they were able to do a job, when given the opportunity. Other kids better than them, which will run into many 1000s across football, weren't able to produce their game at Prem level. Nobody 'knew' Joey Barton would play regularly in the Premier League & that Lee Croft & Vlad Weiss wouldn't. In fact City nearly let Barton go before he even played a game at first team level. SWP was realeased by...David Platt. The bloke then moved to be England U21 manager. Any fans who saw SWP play, knew we had a player straight away. The question was: 'can he do it in the first team?'

We have a load of SWPs & better now & maybe a Silva or 2 in there. Maybe. The question still remains the same & the only answer is: 'Play him & find out'.

No idea why anyone would pose the question "youth or success" as if you cannot have both? Last year we had neither

That's nonsense mate. Sterling is only 20 for a start & cost 44 mil!

There will be some star players come through from Premier League teams. The standard of young players has gone up immensely in recent times. What worries me, is that some of the absolute best ones are at City & Chelsea & if they were somewhere else, they would already be getting the game time Sterling did. By the time they are his age, they may have missed 3 years of development, & therefore never reach their potential.

Have you any idea how rediculous that is? I admire your passion, but that is just rediculous.

I'm afraid you will remain disappointed until we do unearth that gem, which todate, hasn't happened

No you've misunderstood.
I'm not denying that Sterling might prove to be a star player, but I was talking about homegrown academy players, at City, and even more so at Chelsea, where they've won virtually every youth team tournament for the last couple of seasons, yet are still spending millions on the finished article.

Players will still come through the ranks at other teams, but the best of the best will always end up at the team with the most money.
That's the law of the jungle, and as others have already alluded, that team is now us.

Hopefully, we can also produce a few Champions League standard players ourselves, but apart from maybe Jack Wilshire, our major rivals haven't done that for more than a decade.
