Monaco - Post Match thread.

Having thought about it the worst thing about last night wasn't the first half but the way we managed to lose it from a winning position 2nd half.

They were gone, they had offered nothing second half at all and we had chance after chance until Sane scored. For some reason in the 5 minutes or so after our goal we stopped playing, almost waiting for a backlash. Nothing was coming and then they get a cheap free kick, we concede and then panic instead of just doing what we were doing up to Sane's goal. Apart from 2 shocking free kicks I can't remember a single chance for us after their goal.

The frustrating thing is losing a game when the opposition were out on their feet. Even though we had time after their 3rd we seemed to give up. The first half shouldn't have mattered after Sane's goal but somehow we f'ed it up from there.

We all knew this was going to be a bit of a transitional season as Pep looked at the squad and tried to implement his way of playing on it, but that considered it has still been frustrating. A little like Pellegrini constantly saying, '' We play this way always'' when as fans we could all see just a bit of tweaking and we would win more games, a fact he twigged in the end when we won the title, Pep is doing the same.

Whatever is happening with the style and the defence hasn't really worked all season with the personnel we have at the moment. Considering most of them will be replaced next season why persist with a style they struggle with? If we win the FA Cup and finish higher in the league than last season it will probably be considered a reasonable one, but it would still tempered with '' What if? '' for me.

The trouble is, Pep is trying to implement his style. We are going to play that way win, lose or draw.
He won't do pragmatism. He will keep with his same way of working until the players get it. If they
don't, they go and he gets players that do. You just can't say this is the way we are going to play,
but if it doesn't work sometimes, we'll have a go at this way. It's a bit disappointing and sometimes annoying,
but i'm sure with new and younger players in there is a bright future. That's why Pep likes to work with young
players, they're not so set in their ways.

At the moment Monaco are a better team than us it's just that they are a little inexperienced, lets be honest with ourselves here we should have never had a goal lead to take into the second leg. We should have been at lease 1 or 2 goals down from the first leg. Why people are surprised that we went out is beyond me.

And if it wasn't poor finishing (Aguero x2, poor pass by Sterling when he should of scored or given sergio a tap in, also Sane hitting the side netting when should of squared it) it would of been 7, 8, or even 9! It we had took our chances we would be through instead we didn't and the obvious thing is to criticise are defending, which yes was shambolic at times but this is probably how it will be under Pep. We will score more than you me mentality. Big summer ahead!

i get what you are saying, but in the real world, at the top level you absolutely cannot defend like we have been doing, you simply can't and expect to be successful.
i for one minute don't think pep is in the we'll score more you camp giving little regard to the defensive part of the game, the failed attempts at bonnuci and laporte showed he his trying to shore up the defence

Why people are surprised that we went out is beyond me.

Possibly because we scored 6 and could probably have had another 6,had we taken our chances.

While we showed a naivity,as we certainly could have defended better,I genuinely think we were unlucky to go out.

I think any team that concedes 6 goals has the right to be miffed at their defending

I think, what annoys me most about our defending, is it looks to me we are all about
keeping shape closing space, but ignore the fact that it's the fucking football that causes the most damage.
You look when we attack and put balls into the box, we have defenders all over us, they are throwing themselves
at the football and making sure it's cleared, by hook or by crook. Like i say we seem pre occupied with the shape
we are in and whether the line we have is correct. I'd like to see us attack the ball a lot, lot quicker.

The BIG issue at City in the wake of this season for me is the higher up management/recruitment.

- We knew Pep was coming, why weren't his targets bought ready for his arrival?
- Why were big money, big wages signings made in the run up to his arrival (eg Bony), who are not 'Pep players'?

No mate that's madness. The management brought in stones, bravo, kdb, Sterling, gabi Jesus, nolito and sane for pep. We were also touching distance from getting bonucci and laporte for him. Our higher management have done a very good job the last two years, not perfect, but very good

Yes I know and I get it, but it is obvious the players we have at the back aren't up to it and most will be moved on at the end of the season so what is the point in continuing? They won't or can't get it and won't be here soon, it seem slightly pointless to me.

Spineless first half. Thought I was watching Arsenal tbh.

As soon as the first goal went in I knew another one was coming. Giving away possession too easily, horrible pressing. Its like we were waiting for them to score. The players should really be ashamed of themselves, all of them. Horrible defending from Sane on Mendy for the first goal. I know hes not a defender but he has to do better than that. Would of brought Yaya on in the 10th minute, as clearly our whole gameplan went out the window and we looked lost. Mbappe looks a real superstar. Willy with a great save for his first shot. Scores a goal and almost scored another but was an inch offside. He has a wonderful shot. Aguero missed another sitter and a one or two good chances. I was previously against the Mbappe signing but now I think we should buy. It would be like passing on signing on an 18 year old Henry, although he do think he would prefer Real.

I am still in disbelief at our first half performance. Yes, maybe the team selection and tactics can be questioned, but for the players to not show up to one of our most important games of the season is laughable. We were never going to win it this year but to go out at this stage is a step backwards. Woke up in the second half, got back into it, then they score again. I know Vinny may be finished but had he played I am sure this never would have happened. He is a true leader, something we desperately lack.

Lets win the FA cup and get top 4, and we can say its a solid season. Can't wait to see a lot of players leave in the summer.

I agree we could have had another six last night, and I posted somewhere in the mad hot heat of post match last night that, apart from Leicester, the remaining teams would have scored from the chances we had, and gone on to win the leg. It's impossible to say whether it was the kamikaze defending or the lacklustre finishing which contributed more to the loss.

Take a look how many little cretins have come out of the woodwork enjoying us being knocked out across social media, youtube and the like, I suppose we'd be no different if it were the Rags or the Dippers... in a way it's a sign of how much our stature has grown, it's pretty undeniable if they stopped to think about it(can't stop paying attention to us even if they tried).

We were going through on goal difference before the freekick, looked nowhere near as uncomfortable as in the first half either... in fact at 2-1 I was thinking they were looking ragged in open play(coming forward but no cutting edge rushing things) and would eventually leave us space to attack since we were still creating chances. Which is why I was dreading the freekick before it was taken, it was the last thing we needed and gave them a proper chance to throw everything at when they were struggling to make anything of note at that point.

Aye. It's called living in limbo. We'll just have to suffer and hope it gets better.
I'm sure it will, but nothing is guaranteed.

I hope I'm not the only who noticed the amount of times Stones was left outnumbered by his teammates last night either, not just Silva and Aguero at least they were anywhere near play(both should have done far better and closing down though, it would have stopped at least one goal IMO)... I've seen quite a few putting him at fault bizarrely what they expected him to do against 3 players passing it around him I don't know.

I turned to my lad as they were lining up that free kick and said they're going to score here... it just had a feeling of inevitability about it

I posted typical city coming up and i had just pressed post and they scored,we had no composure at all,i was shouting forv kev off and yaya on and try and keep the ball and calm it all down, really annoyed by the whole thing

This thread is testament to how footballing values have become totally warped by silly money.

Strip out the verbiage and we're saying we need another £200m/£300m to outdo ragged-arsed teams like Monaco (and Leicester City).

And then we say "let's raid the fcukers of their talent". Why? Because we're minted and can't bring on our own youngsters or motivate our own millionaires or organise a defence. Don't blame the boss though. It's not "his" team until he's spent hundreds of millions.

Then finally we win a trophy (hopefully) and pay homage to the best shopper manager in the world.

This isn't a go specifically at Pep. But it's symptomatic of our club and several others.
