Mary D's

I find it remarkable how few pubs there are around the Etihad. The Bank Of England and The Mitchell Arms should be two of a dozen between the ground and Town yet they’re both boarded up and there are NO others! It’s very bizarre

I was once told by someone working at the town hall it is a stratergy by GMP and MCC that if a pub closed near the ground and their was less it was better, as with the close proximity to town, encouraging people to drink there in an already policed and controlled area than us spread from bradford, beswick, ancoats etc.

Though with Ancoats expanding with new bars and restraunts it seems pointless now as you can walk 5 mins to several bars aroundd blossom st. and 10-15 mims to tge NQ. (suppose that prove stheir point too).

They probably did until their club bought it and left it boarded up.

To be fair there's loads of pubs within a quick walk of Anfield. There isn't at Eastlands. It'd help a lot with congestion after the game if there was.

Mary D's will always be packed on a matchday because there's not much competiton.

Used to be Bradford Labour Club. Was well known for being a decent place back then apparently. The owner was Michael Kehoe ... who had several businesses, including 'Kehoes' a wine bar at Failsworth Pole a time ago.

We used to go in when we first moved to the stadium. Seemed ok then, beer aside. But it just got too much for us with the overloud DJ, and constant din. The beer went rapidly downhill too, from bearable, to utter dishwater at top dollar.

Kehoes isn't a wine bar mate, it's a shithole rather like Mary Ds and it's a mile away from the pole. Think you're mixing it up with Leggats/Astburys wine bar which is at the pole but was owned different people, back in the day, one who now has La Via Tapas restaurant and one who has The Ancoats Lad on Oldham Street.

I really miss the pubs round Rusholme pre and post match. I've been in Mary Ds once and I can see the attraction for some but it's not for me. On the rare occasions I go for a beer before and after I'll go to town. Used to go before and after every match at Maine Road.

I'm surprised Wetherspoons have not bought that lovely old building opposite the South Stand and turned it into a nice bar.

Me & my mates regularly drink in the Bradford before home games. It's a bit basic but it's like the Dorchester compared to Mary D's. The beer is excellent and very reasonably priced. Good friendly atmosphere too.

Used to be a raggy pub when I worked down there about 7/8 years ago, never thought about going in. May give it a try if walking from town in the summer.

No it's not mate.
He may be thinking of the other Bradford , which was flattened for the Academy/ College.
Francis used to own it and have away fans in iirc.
You couldn’t beat Moss-side/Rusholme boozers back in the day, i grew up around there so they were also my local pubs, The Denmark, Whitworth, Clarence, Parkside, Sherwood, Lord Lion, Osbornes, Bee hive, Claremont, Princess etc.
Tend to stay local now and NQ or the Townley occasionly, but it’s not the same or maybe the mrs is right and ive turned into a miserable old bastard!

I used to like The Eastlands. Go in the Townley usually now. The beer is pish in Mary D's but do like to go in on derby day.

Mary D’s is great if you like to partake in the singing of songs that mock the Munich air disaster with little come back from your fellow blues
A bit of a stereotype there, I've no doubt should one break out some perhaps quite a lot of people would join in but I can honestly say I've can't remember the last time anything about that sung in the last few seasons.

i agree. I've been in there quite a few times this season and past seasons and rarely ever hear munich songs being sung on mass ( maybe the odd person chanting it) . I've actually heard it more in the ground/other pubs in manchester. i think its a good pub with a decent atmosphere. its actually full of families as well. id much rather go there then some of the ridiculously expensive pubs in say the northern quarter.

we desperately need more pubs near the ground.

Most of them gone

Unfortunately I can't see that ever happening. Certainly won't be any new builds, as breweries and pub companies who are still building such are aiming for food and destination pubs, and the area where our stadium is isn't in that demographic.

Thing is, that area was full of local pubs, I recall going in many back in the day ..... ( The Honeycomb being a favourite, in the middle of Fort Beswick) sadly though, for various reasons they were in decline through lack of use long before the stadium came along. And as much as any pub takes over the bar on matchdays, it's not enough to make them pay when they are mostly empty the rest of the time.

No pubs will be built, and the last asking price for the Mitchel arms from the brewery was £195000 which for a pub that has only maybe 40-50 (with summer concerts and rugby weekend) viable days opening no one will invest.

Maybe if the gasworks and holt town area around the ground finally do get re-generated and there is scope for food, drink and entertainment establishments being built will the area have any new drining holes open.

Aside from new builds there's pubs 2 minutes away from the ground that have been boarded up for years.

There are several mate ... but as said, while they would make £££££'s on matchdays, it's the rest of the time they would struggle to stay afloat. People just don't use local boozers like they used to do.

I’m having a couple of pints out now to wind down the weekend and I’m one of three drinkers in.
