World Cup VAR

I'm an Aussie and I think it was a penalty. And Risdon definitely touched the ball. And as sure as he faintly touched the ball he made enough contact with Griezmann to cause him to go down even if it was "soft" and he played it up a bit.

IMO the ball wasn't cleared or it's course altered enough to ensure the attacker didn't have a realistic chance to take control of the ball. As evidenced by Griezmann knocking it forward. Although he was never going to get it before the keeper his progress was clearly stopped so it had to be a penalty. If the ball was moved by Risdon even half a metre and therefore no longer able to be controlled by Griezmann it's no penalty for me. Which as many posters have already said just goes to show VAR still allows much room for individual interpretation. Grey areas will be with us forever.

For what it's worth I think VAR should be implemented wherever possible as I've seen more horrific challenges and clear penalties denied or waved off ridiculously this season than most others I can remember. Makes our achievements in the league even more remarkable. And VAR really is for those howlers. Not that VAR will always get it right.

Have to say had my doubts about VAR but it’s the future and it will become more streamlined when more referees get up to speed with it! Think that’s why it didn’t get voted in for this season in the premier they want the referees to train all season for it.

If they don’t vote it in for next season I will smell something very fishy by the clubs who without VAR want benifit as much.
Yeah agree, but if they want to fuck certain teams over or assist certain teams then they can turn a blind eye either way with looking at decisions or not with var..

They have checked with VAR on the open play goal. So you have to wait for the VAR to confirm before you can fully celebrate the goal?
Not a pen for France in my book btw
They check with VAR on every goal.

The slight delay was the goal line decision system.

The question is, whether we get those decisions even with v.a.r. & if we do, whether Mo Salah then gets a totally dodgy one at the other end, to even it out.

If it can be done without being bent, & it is done quickly, then there is no problem with it.

I don't trust the people involved, to implement it fairly.

With var we will get more things right then wrong so it’s a good thing
Exactly this.

Was a correct decision. And so long as they get more right than wrong then it’s a good thing.

The very fact united and Liverpool voted against it in the Prem tells you all you need to know.

I'm with you there 100%. Like those officials for the CL matches behind the goal line. Literally 5 feet from Raz being brought down as clear as day and interpreted as nothing. Dodgy bastards.

When something is obvious they be called out on it but yeah get what you mean.

The rules need to be rewritten, simple as that.

For me, that penalty awarded to Griezmann is the worst decision I've ever seen and it cost Australia the game. But for some, it was a penalty including the VAR officials.

So the law needs to be rewritten to decide whether:

Is all contact that doesn't touch the ball a penalty?

Or;

Does the contact have to actually significantly impede the player?

In the Griezmann case, I don't think it's a penalty under either condition but there are a lot of soft penatlies awarded that meet the first condition but not the second condition. The authorities need to come and out and simply say whether contact is allowed in football or not.

Hyperbole much?
