Media persecution of Raheem Sterling

He wasn't great last night l but the role is wrong for him - why's he got his back to goal holding of 2 or 3 every time? I think the major issue for England is there isn't anyone with the speed of thought to judge his runs and find him in soace. We should also acknowledge that Kane could never play for City - he'd have no chance of keeping up. Sterling had to turn around and wait several times

He doesn't exactly help himself with his performances at international level . Southgate will inevitably give in to media pressure and drop him and in all fairness he can have few complaints. Having said that england are an ordinary side . Rat face lingaard is worse but somehow escapes criticism.

Because he had to come deep.
He manages to "keep up" at spuds. Would fit in easily in any elite side.

Delle Ali scored 2 in 26
Lingard scored 1 in 12
So others are not exactly prolific either ...

I feel like Raheem will suffer in this formation and in all fairness had a poor game last night. I actually think he will be more suited to that position against better teams. Against teams like Tunisia and i imagine Panama they just totally congest the middle and sit deep which gave Raheem no room at all. 352 against these teams is rediculous really as well, no need for 3 CB's when we are playing a team who had no intention of coming forward. Would much rather see 433 with Sterling to the right of Kane and Rashford on the other side. Get Walker at RB where he is so dangerous and i think that suits us much better against poor sides.

Fair point but I don't think it's best practice to be chopping and changing formation based on opposition. Some tweaks would make more sense to me, for example last night Sterling should've been given a freer role to drop deep and wide to link play with Kane more central as a lone striker.

Bet the players and Southgate love Sterling in the squad because we play shit the spotlight is always on Sterling not the squad members.

Yeah i think he can do a lot better if given the right role in the team. Just seemed to be totally snuffed out of the game last night. All those dangerous positions he gets into for City and England in previous few games, he just got nowhere near that area last night.

Yep, didn’t have a single shot at goal last night.

Sterling will always be the fall guy for the media, he could score a hat trick in this World Cup but some twat would pick up on yeah but he gave the ball away, it won't change anytime soon I'm afraid.

His passing, movement and scoring abilities are excellent. You think he wouldn't dislodge what we currently have?

Dislodge Aguero or Jesus? Is that a serious question? He wouldn't be able to keep up with City's football.

Fwiw i think he's a fantastic number 9, he would slot into most teams easily, perfectly suited to traditional English football, would fit well in Italy or Germany too but would struggle in Spain.

Yep - taking the blue specs off for one minute, that is a serious question.
Kun is getting on and is more and more off the pace and Jesus - well, can see glimmers of talent but not entirely sure what he is. I know on here he's the new Pele.
Also a myth that Kane isn't quick.

Nothing to do with blue specs, infuriating how much that gets thrown around on this forum.

Like I said, i don't believe he would fit, Aguero and Jesus do because they're better footballers.

For all we know that may be the agreed plan. Perhaps Southgate and Sterling have had that chat and Sterling for all we know may be happy with it as he knows he is going to get it in the press no matter what. So long as he has the full support of all the squad and the management who cares what is written about him if it keeps the spotlight and pressure of the collective? Just an idea, but we dont know. If that is the plan, it is a pretty sensible mature decision

I think the chances we create in and around the box would be a dream for someone like Kane. He is a great finisher and he'd have a field day for us i think. Thats not taking anything away from Kun or Gab, just that Kane would thrive in this team with his finishing in the box.
