World Cup VAR

Thank goodness we don't have Smalling.
Leicester are gonna win the WC btw

So let's have a camera on every single player, hooked up to a ref. As you say, the more the better. I can't wait for that. The games will be brilliant.

Gradual trial and error. Gonna take lot longer to get perfect. I said before it was too soon to use it for this tournament but signs are looking good for the future of the game.

The number of penalties given is a massive negative. Not every little bit of contact in the box shouldn't have to be a penalty. Players are using it to their advantage like the Ronaldo penalty against Spain and the VAR is more often than not giving a penalty for minimal contact, don't like it one bit, will kill the atmosphere at games.

You're seeking perfection. In a game played by humans. As with most VAR supporters you've clearly lost sight that it's a game. With all its inherent foibles and mistakes - the exact things that have helped contribute to its glorious history. If you want every major decision to be contested go and watch cricket or rugby. Games ruined by video refs. Leave the beautiful game and its mistakes to those that just enjoy it for what it was and always should be - a fucking game.

Cricket and Rugby ruined by technology ? Really ? And Tennis ?

Not seeking perfection. Just don’t want a Ref to guess at decisions or miss major decisions which totally ruins the game.

You're arguing with the closed minded.

How did Ireland feel about the 'beautiful game' when Henry handled the ball over the goal line and denied qualification? Or indeed how England's 'Golden Generation' felt when Lampard's goal was disallowed against Germany or Sol Campbell's headed goal in a match cos he climbed his own player?!!

It's akin to 'Romantics' being enamoured with the story of 'Romeo and Juliet', forgetting that there's violence and death all around them! They miss the details!

Things aren't as rosy as you think in a game of football and 'justice' isn't always done. In a World Cup, a team has less chance to make an impact, so why should they be cheated out of a fair result just for some 'talking points'?!

@BlueHammer85, they won't get it.

Save your energy!

If VAR results in more soft pens awarded then it’ll ruin the game but that doesn’t have to be the case if the lawmakers clarify the rules to make clear that contact does not equal foul.

!

We've already seen a number of games in this tournament decided by VAR decisions or decisions not referred. In it's current format teams will still be cheated out of a fair result so it's more than just talking points.

People seem keen to write off the opinions of those questioning VAR as dinosaurs or close minded. It's really nothing of the sort.

I'll be happy when we get a good VAR into the league. I want better than what we've seen this past week or so, and I'm not so close minded that I'll blindly defend a system I don't think will work

Top post, half the fun of the game....

VAR is turning football into a penalty shoot out. Actually it is turning it into a game of who gets awarded their penalty and who doesnt. Utter shite. Killing the game. But hey, guess i am just a dinosaur because i like the real game (including mistakes) rather than a cleaned up sanitised, sterile version.....

I think what you're misunderstanding about VAR is that, actually, it has the ability to show if someone was throwing themselves to the ground at point of contact anyway!

It will (and should) reverse decisions not normally seen with the naked eye.

Neymar Jr's hammy acting is a superb case in point WHICH, ironically, you're blatantly ignoring!!

That pen was given in the first instance and then, rightly, reversed!!

"There are none so blind..."

And you're EXACTLY correct!

The advocating supporters of VAR on this board see the benefits of the system, but NOT in its current format.

AGAIN, something the naysayers conveniently ignore when stoking up an argument about it!!

Apart from yourself most say 'it brings no value', which CLEARLY isn't true, and therefore it should be scrapped, not 'it needs a better end product'.

Yes, you ARE a dinosaur!

And, yes, you're talking about implementations of a system incorrectly used.

*sigh*

Okay, one more time for the cheap seats...

Now, I'm not looking at nuances in this reply, I'm looking at controlling the chaos the current system throws up.

A '2 challenge' system would allow certain 'incidents' and 'fun' in the game to happen. Why? Cos it's only '2 challenges'.

So, the implications are this; the captain or manager can 'challenge' a decision or incident anytime they want, potentially. If the ref and the VAR panel agree there's no CLEAR case to answer, that team loses a 'challenge' and soon lose control of what happens later in the game if they run out. That becomes the ref's discretion and that ref DOESN'T have to refer to anything if he chooses not to (at the moment the ref seems under pressure from all sides to review almost anything tangible, so sometimes he says 'fook off, I'm not').

Right now, as we've seen in this World Cup in the last couple of games, players and managers are throwing up their 'TV' gestures at almost everything and our benefit at home is seeing there's [mostly] nothing to answer for. Now, imagine a '2 challenge' system right now. Twice (under rules and obligation) the ref says 'okay, let's look' and sees nothing, that team loses their right early and are subjected to fate.

All that nonsense would soon stop and frivolous 'challenges' would stop almost immediately when teams wise up. I would say it would encourage players to stop feigning injury/ contact should it cost their team down the line and the spirit of the game would be revived.

In my opinion.

I actually believe VAR is inevitable but think anyone who thinks it will solve manipulation by officials are deluded. BUT, I actually agree with you that IF it is introduced the appeals system is the way to go.

im sure someone will put me right but the other day spain v iran when they were all rolling round on the goal line why did nobody say penalty the defender clearly had his arm on the ball they repalyed to several times at end of game saying oh this is great defending no it was a penalty VAR is down to individual interpretation
