Media persecution of Raheem Sterling

I haven't mentioned anything about how big a fan anyone is so I've no idea where that's coming from.

Some of the defences of him are irrational, I've been irrational myself when defending him, but that's borne out of a frustration of the irrationality of the persecution he receives from the media and their flock.

Go on any fan forum of any club and you see the same thing when they feel their player is being targetted unfairly.

Then defend him in ways that make sense. Someone going to the finest detail of the spin of the ball is just plain daft. That’s what lead to my post which you commented on. What you’re saying makes sense but whoever the player, if you miss a free header from a few yards out against the worst team in the competition then just take it on the chin. Bad miss better luck next time and move on. It was days after the game people were trying to find different excuses other than it being what it was - a bad miss.

I was watching last night with mainly united fans and all agreed had Sterling played that badly as Rashford did there would be a witch hunt taking place.

The difference is, if that was Sterling last night instead of Rashford they would have been calling for him to be sent home and banished from the National Team.

Who would? Shearer? I doubt that. Other pundits no they wouldn’t. So what you mean is a few idiots in the pub would want that. Let’s not get carried away

The only defense I can give sterling for not burying the header is that he's a terrible header of a ball
Can't remember who he scored against for us last season with one but it just seemed to hit him and he had no idea where it was going

Surprised this hasn't been posted on here

Despite all the changes they just happen to single out Sterling

I would never go to a pub to watch an England game because I'd rather not sit with fucking morons but from what I gather from speaking to people who have had the dubious pleasure of watching the England games in pubs this world cup, it is not just a few idiots who have it in for Sterling, it is the vast majority of people watching.

Cardiff

Not too dissimilar to his saved effort the other day but the pace on the ball helped him on this one.

Spot-on . I have got into the habit of going to the pub for a couple beforehand and then coming home to watch the match in peace. Some of the comments made by the once-every-four years so called England fans have been hilarious. Sadly my local is infested with Rags and plastic Liverpool fans and they usually start abusing Sterling before the game starts..and that's when I leave. For some other reason, perhaps because he actually tries to play proper football, they also seem to hate Harry Maguire! They are worse than morons (perhaps cretin is a better word).

I believe you’re just making stuff up now

Watched last night's game in a pub in London, just after a blind alley run from Rashford barmaid opined that Rashford should always play instead of Sterling.

Sterling has a tough mentality, he's played in far bigger games than Rashford's bit part games, and has been steady, if nothing else in his 2 England performances. He's had 2 assists, and linked up well with the rest of the team, and hopefully if England do progress, Southgate will hopefully tweak the formation to get the best out of the team, and Sterling.
But to say that Rashford is better for England than Sterling on last night's performance, is total non starter, he couldn't even get his shots on target, but I suppose the miss was intentional to avoid winning the group eh?

Statistics as usual dont tell the real story. Raheems "assist" the other day is in the real world a howling miss. Gabbys "assist" for brazil a miscontrol. Kanes "third" a shot he knew nothing about. Oh for the days before the internet when everything wasnt analysed to death . Raheems place is safe now anyway after last nights fare.

The assist he's credited for was for Lingard's goal. Stones' is officially unassisted as the ball came to him from an opponent.

I can take on board what you say but you keep saying MISS that is the rag spin on it , It was a reaction header by someone who is not very good at headers that was on TARGET and SAVED if you want to say it was a poor header go ahead but it was not a miss , Sterling did miss in the 81st minute I can not make my mind up whether you hate Sterling or think you are being objective , either way can you keep it factual

I disagree it was a reaction header - It was a well rehearsed set piece. If he is no good at headers, should he have been the one in the box waiting for it?

an interesting point , so the fact that he was there and not particularly good at headers suggests Kane`s set up of Sterling was a poor one that he should have got to his foot, Sterling did well then considering the ball was 5 foot away from where it should have been

I wonder why they would rehearse such a set piece using Raheem as the one in the box waiting for it if he is no good at headers.
Or are you being sarcastic?

Even with your theory, is still suggests Sterling was still the wrong person to be closest to goal as there was potential error in the delivery to him and from that range with ball to foot, any player could have slotted it
