United thread 2018/19

Don't think anyone doubts he was a very promising player before the leg break. What there is doubt over is whether a few passable games this season justify a big contract.

I don't think United use him well. He's underrated as the poster said - if people watched him and didnt let the color of his shirt cloud their vision, they'd see that - but he should be so much more.

Whether it is Mourinho's system or the fact that he wasn't Mourinho's cup of tea, he just hasn't shined as brightly as I think he should have. He's one of those who would have thrived in Guardiola's system, I think.

Agreed about the contract situation. It's entirely possible that the injury has an intransient impact and if that's the case, the worst thing anyone should do if offer a 5 year contract.

So Shaw has a 52m contract when you look at buying someone else and the wages you have to pay them that doesn’t seem that bad.

Bit like sterling pay him 300k a week for 5 years is 75m if we had to buy someone comparesble it would cost well over 100m and no guarantees.

I think the difference is that Sterling is a mainstay and a vital cog in City's attack while Shaw has barely played over the past 3 seasons (not necessarily all his fault) and hasn't shown that he deserves a 5 year extension based on what he's given United over the past few seasons.

5 years i believe at £150k per week, not clear if that is a basic or if it is made up of performance related bonuses and pies.
Sponsored by Greggs, the official pie supplier.
A spokesman for United said "Greggs and United have a relationship going back many years starting with Harry Gregg"
A spokesman for Luke Shaw said "Do you deliver?"

Yeah can see that point of view but the rags would look at the fee plus wages for a new player in that position and think it’s worth it.

Contracts United need to renew before 2020:

Rashford
Matic
Bailly
Martial
De Gea
Mata
Herrera
Jones
Smalling
Valencia
Young
Pereira

They've just established the minimum amount for a first team player as £160,000 a week. I imagine Shaw's new contract is going to cost them an incredible amount of money when all's said and done.

So you have seen him play alot. Figures.

Not a lot, whenever I have caught United on but he has had a good start to the season hence his England call up too. He can't be praised on here though, just a fat rag isn't he.

He's a decent left-back, no question, but by the end of his new contract he'll have cost United circa £100m in total. I suspect even the most ardent United fan would find those figures eye-watering.

Numbers wise of course, not surprising United throwing that kind of money about that's what they do. Whatever he is being paid doesn't take away the fact he is a good player whilst not long turned 23.

Can't see Billy Bird Sh*t or Smalling getting a new contract, plus there's a few other want-away's so realistically, unless they spend a fortune, they are F-U-C-K-E-D!

That would make sense if he was a consistent top performer, instead of a guy who has average barely 10 league games a year who couldn't get past Ashley Young in the pecking order. Reality is, even with Shaw they still need another leftback, so they aren't saving anything. Instead they've just massively raised the bar for what a squad player gets at the club, while locking a guy who as recently as last season the were wanting rid of, into a contract that no one else will match

Interesting that Shaw has signed a new five year contract given that he has been thrown under so many buses by PEG. Maybe he has been told that a new manager will be in situ very soon hence his signing. Either that or the fat fuck thought nobody else would be mad enough to give him a five year deal on mega money
